So I have been tossing around the idea of getting a motard to commute with and play around with.
I want to spend less than $4K and would like something that can do short stints on the highway without destroying it.
And I'll say it ahead of time, the KLR650 and DR650 do nothing for me... If anyone has experience with a Husaberg or Husky input would greatly appreciated.
Found so far:
2004 Husaberg FS450 for $3750
2007 Husky 510 SMR $3600 b/o
2007 CRF 450R supermoto - $3800

Im looking to sell mine coming up. Havent fired it up yet after its winter nap. It will be listed after I take it out of the basement.
2003 KTM 525EXC Lots of parts, street plate.
PM me if you want a part list and what not
If you want to do highway duty at all, I'd look again at the KLR and DR 650s. You'll beat those MX based machines up very quickly asking them to be treated like a normal street mount.
i want that husky.
My 525 EXC was one of the better all around SuperMoto's I've had. Long highway sprints will kill any of them over time, but mine had no problems running 70mph up I-395 for 35 miles. The 6th gear ratio on that bike really makes a big difference. The motor was smooth as butter as well!
I think the CRF you posted above would suck..or any full MX bike conversion for that matter if it involved any highway or long commutes.
Can't comment on the Berg as i've never read about them or had one.
The Husky, never owned one but just reading around, seems 9 out of 10 husky 510's either pop a motor or pop a transmission.
The Yamaha WR 450 has been great to me, smooth motor, plenty of power, and I just added 1 tooth up front to get some top end out of it. Oddly, it feels like it pulls harder down low now as well?
If you want to try a supermoto sometime, you're welcomed to try mine to see if it's something you'll like..mine is not for sale tho![]()
Yamaha
husky's are nice.... great to flaunt around... impossible to get parts! Easy to maintain, but no parts, make maintenance expensive / hard.
Go KTM. With a dirt convert... the lack of 6th makes it suck wind on any straights.. ie commuting would suck..

I should clarify my commute is 3.8 miles, so commuting will not be a big concern.
remove 'highway' from your equation, take all backroads and have way more fun. i agree that converted MX'er for street (long duty) = no thanks.
for Hall's Cycles. i can't believe how fast they get stuff to me because it's usually in stock. great guys to work with.
for a backroad toy, i'd jump on an '07 SMR510 in a heartbeat.

I'm looking to do the same. Selling my SV1ks and getting a tard.

I'd vote for the husky out of the 3. Or dudes 525. But don't be scared off by the berg...cliffs cycles in Norfolk Ma deals with them, and the shop is aces.

Close your eyes, look deep in your soul, step outside yourself and let your mind go.
if you go Husky as you can see you need parts... from the 1 source Hall's.
Be well versed on how to tear things apart.
In my case 2nd gear went. Well known issue.
Means complete engine rebuild.
Then timing chain....
Then I dropped a valve shim....
All in the course of 5k miles.
Dealer network was shitcanned in 2008 when BMW bought them out. My closest dealer is 100 miles from central NH.

any motard requires more maintenance...and if that maintenance is put off...
And my husky has a wide radio 6 speed trans.
For example my 95 does not have an oil pump and instead has oil reeds. Those reeds gave to be replaced every 2nd oil change. Sure its a pain in the ass..but the smiles are so worth it. And not to shoot down docs bike but mx bikes are too maintenance intensive to be considered as a street ride.

...or Wagner (MA), or Eddie's (NH), or Uptite, or MotoXotica, or Taskys, or Motosportz, or Bill's, or Ridersville, or Tri-County, etc. (~80 in US) most parts are readily available from the better dealers and shipping is quick. more improvements are in play for 2011
the kind of motard it sounds like he wants, pure excitement, will require motocross-bike-like attention. both my Huskys have been a dream to work on when it comes to all the frequent maint stuff. i dunked my '07 250F motor under water twice, to the point it choked completely... even accidentally leaving water in the motor one of the times for a whole winter did nothing to the bike.
hmm, i know you're sour on the brand but the complete opposite has been happening with Husky since the BMW acquisition in '07. big shakeups need time to settle, i've seen and heard nothing but great things from Husky over the past 4 years. the all-new TC449, TE449 and TE511 are getting rave reviews and winning big races already. the cash is flowing in the right directions for sure.
anyway, long rant short... i think they're tough bikes and worth a hard look.

Docs bike is an X though. It's a dual sport.

my neighbor might still be selling his XR650R 'tard: NESR Classified Ad
there's an '08 TE450 on SMJ that's prob still available, i almost grabbed it after i let the SXV go. full dirt/DS setup goes with it: 2008 TE450 Marthas Vineyard
look into the Husky 610's too. much more 'commuter' friendly and less maintenance.
