I don't think gear would have helped in this particular situation... which is what most squids probably say: "If you're going to get messed up, gear won't even help." But I think (I'm totally making this up), that most accidents aren't nearly that gruesome, and gear will save your skin (and head).The worst part is if a squid did see that it wouldn't even encourage them to wear gear b/c "it'll never happen to them"
