Helmet cleaning

How do you guys clean your helmets? The arai's i've had were pretty easy to take apart and clean (of course they never fit back together and stay in place the way they originally did)

I haven't attempted to clean my HJC's that I used for racing but I really need to. The smell is unbearable.

What do you clean them with, the padding and the inside of the helmet and has anyone pulled the padding out of the HJC's? I thinkit's the CS12 model or something, haven't really looked at it.

BTW, some helmets have removeable cheek pads. If yours are removeable, take 'em out and wash 'em !!!!!!

I never had that problem when I was racing, and not because I wasn't working hard enough. I remember taking my helmet off after a 30 min. endurance race with tne liners totally soaked with sweat. But, I did wash the liners and spray the inside with Fabreze.
Of course, I do bathe at least once a day.

i just hit mine with fabreeze and air them out....and i sweat like a pig...I have a helmet from 00 that is still wearable and i wore that in NC heat...

I imagine any spray fabric cleaner would be good.....you may want to check the laundry isle of the groc. store..maybe even like a woolite solution or something? you will just need to make sure to rinse it good...

I thought the point was you couldn't remove the padding?

If you can remove the padding, take it all out, put it in a little net bag that will let the water go through.

Then just throw the whole thing in the washer on the delicate cycle by itself with some soap, and when you're done put it in the dryer on low heat with some fabric softener.

Bingo - brand new helmet.

Astringent bro.

Buy some astringent (like Johnson & Johnson) at CVS.
I soak a papertowel and scrub the padding with it, it cleans it pretty well and kills any bacteria so it doesn't smell.

I use laundry soap and warm water in a bucket most of the time. Remove the parts that are removable first and then wash the inside of the helmet.
I couldn't even imagine some spray on shit doing any real cleaning after seeing what the water looks like when I'm done cleaning them, especially the offroad helmets.
They do always end up smelling nice and clean like being fresh from the dryer.. Oh yeah, it's just as important to dry them properly as well. I would always "dab" most of the wetness out with a towel and leave it in the sun to air dry the rest (or put it near the woodstove in the colder months). I've learned if you don't dry it out, it'll smell worse than when you started
