I've ridden the older BMW F800 and have a 790 ADV-R. They couldn't be any more different. The BMW is sewing machine electric feel of heavy flywheel without the rush of ever coming on the pipe. The KTM feels like it is a two stroke in comparison. It pulls and then screams like a very lightweight flywheel of a two stroke. Harder to ride as a two stroke as well. The BMW is easy to ride as it doesn't ever get exciting. The KTM is very exciting to ride.

I haven't ridden the Duke but have the F800ST. I agree that the BMW is quite smooth, mature in power delivery and overall a very pleasant sport touring bike. The gearing via the belt was quite high, so economy was terrific, but power delivery sedate. Overall, I think the F800ST was a great sport touring bike with a low wet weight, but gobs of comfort. I see the Duke to be more mental/raw which can translate to a more exciting power delivery.
Well, got my bike back saturday morning and got in about 180miles on sunday.....farking cold. No dirt (limited by the folks i was riding with) but hopefully next time.
Definitely got a better feel for it this time, great ride, everything seems to be shaking out well so far. This thing has some grunt. power wheelies (cut short from the AWC) in 3rd, but a lot of fun for sure. Very nimble and wants to be ridden faster than I am willing to do on salted roads. Falls into turns very easily, but it seems to pull to the inside, not holding the line without some input, any thoughts on suspension adjustment that might help this?
off topic here, but I got pulled over last month on my ADV and the officer accused us of being "on the pipe". First time I've heard that phrase, actually. It was 32 degrees at 6:00pm and we were going the speed limit, one of the guys just has a really loud exhaust haha.
Got pulled over on the 1290 sar last year in western mass. Cop was a bit surprised how fast you can go on knobbies. He asked "Does this really have 1290 cc engine?", I told him yea, well, technically 1301. He was shocked it was bigger than his harley... Still gave me a ticket.
Kawasaki just released an updated KLR650 today, 3 different trim models. Fuel injection, ABS, factory luggage options, led headlight, crash bars, more alternator output, etc. Still a porker (for a single) at 460 wet, but they’ll sell a ton of them for sure.

Edit, that 460 wet is with full tank (~6 gallons) of fuel, adds a little perspective.

That is completely mediocre. Wonder where it will be priced
I still want a T700.
Base is 6700/7000, without/with ABS.
7400 and 8000 for the ones with ABS and OEM farkles.
Super mediocre, but $1850 cheaper than a Wee, and $3000 cheaper than a T700 at the same weight.
It’s not my cup of tea, and they should’ve done this update 10 years ago, but like I said, they’ll sell a shit ton.

Kawi updated the KLR and was still able to market it at the same price new of the previous generation. It’s definitely not “fancy” but plenty of budget adventure riders out there that will bite. The market for more “luxury” adventure bikes is rather full with the AT, T7 & 790a. The market for a bike below 10k and capable is wide open. I think it is a great move on Kawasaki’s part.
That post is probably the first time I've seen the T700 touted as a "luxury" offer. It was supposed to be the bargain offer. (And in many respects still is.)
The only thing that really makes sense about the new KLR is the giant gas tank. Otherwise, there are so many other better alternatives in it's price range and displacement IMO.

I mean at least it looks like something modern.
also that reddit post is hilarious.
I really appreciate Kawi's commitment to the original design philosophy of "cheapest and good enough with a big fukken gas tank and if you're riding it you're not looking at it." Surprised they bothered to change anything after they added EFI.

Anyone have any seat time on the redesigned DL1000? 2014 and up?
I’ve seen like one pop up under 6k online.
I wouldn’t toss it out of the garage. But don’t want to be the guniea pig

Yep, exactly. My friend got one with low miles used and loves it. The wet weight is low and the engine is torque laden. It’s a nice adventure bike. Less off road oriented than the africa twin but more comfortable. It also used to be cheap but now new ones have become too expensive in my opinion. Definitely a bike I would consider as a reliable adventure bike. A huge improvement over the predecessor
Demoed one at NECC a few years back when Suzuki had a demo truck there.
It's a nice bike, if a bit vanilla. The suspension felt great for soaking up bumps and potholes in the road. For a bike with 100hp and 75 flt-lbs of torque, it doesn't "feel" like a fast bike - not a dig, just the power is nice and smooth and predictable.
The early models (2014/2015) had an ECU issue that was covered by a recall. I think they installed a 2016 ECU that made a big difference in the low RPM fueling. Speaking of fueling, it needs premium gas.
It is a tall bike and sorta top-heavy, compared to other bikes that you and I have owned. (I owned a Tiger 1050 for a year, and ended up selling it because the height and heft got annoying for everyday riding)
Never ridden a first gen, but supposedly the 2014+ models were huge improvements. The 2018 models got cornering ABS and combined brakes. The 2020 "1050" model got some more hp, electronic throttle, new dash and styling.
Premium doesnt bother me. The Harley takes 93. What does bother me is the weight. That is gettting old dealing with that.
The vstrom seems to check a lot of boxes. Specifically for me would be cast wheels which id much prefer over spoked skinny wheels. I like the upright style, ability to do some very mild off roading with good on road manners plus hard bags all around.
