Rich,
Wish I could say I have never heard of your story before. Many times when employees become partners and it now becomes their profit margin, the discounts stop.
Again, regular customers are the ones that will normally get discounts, but that is up to each dealership.
300.00 mounted, sorry, that price is below our dealer cost. Funny how a mail order company can sell a tire below dealer cost. Makes you go HMMM. How did they buy it that cheap?
Retail on the Pilot power 191rear, 155 front or 346 for the pair and 25 each to mount and balance rims only. Winter specials will be run this year for the service department, and it will include tires.
Even if I did 10 % off for (hypothetical at this point) NESR members, you would be looking at 312 and 45.00 for mounting. or 357.00 plus the governors cut. No sales tax is also a good point. But remember my previous points, who do you call when you have an issue.
Degs makes some good points. Especially about cleaning your wheels prior to bringing them to the dealer. We clean the wheels prior to mounting, for exactly the reason Derek states, with 2 oz of grit, grime and chain lube, how good is the balance.
Also, some dealers have taken advantage of the double digit growth in the industry. They have become less consumer friendly. Profit margins have been reduced primarily due to the cost of doing business. Insurance up (when do they ever lose money?), gas up, wages up, training up, chemicals, uniforms, rags, hazardous waste disposal, lights, rent, storage.
Our labor rate still only 65.00. Compare to some other local dealers that are over 78.00 an hour.
BTW. Checked with Columbia Suzuki for Rich. Bought the tires there 20.00 mount and balance, bought them somewhere else, 40.00. This seems to be the norm.
Parkway Cycle: 40.00 no matter where the tire was purchased, does send some mail order tires packing if they are no good. 82.00 labor rate
Greater Boston Motorsports: 40.00 per off the bike if not bought there. 78.50 labor rate
Bettencourts: 25.00 off the bike, bought there or not. Seems like my pricing is pretty good. Glad to know it. And i'll repeat 65.00 labor rate. 3 fully certified Honda Mechanics, 4 fully certified Suzuki mechanics, 1 District service (previous) manager American Suzuki Motor Corp, to go please.
As for the pricing on tires, all the other dealers quoted the same numbers I did for Pilot Powers in the 180/120 combo.
Would giving a 10% discount to NESR members change the profits in my service department, not sure, will you guys buy tires in winter?? Thats when I need the business, I have more than I can shake a stick at right now. But always looking to do the right thing, and I think we are.
Gotta go, My day off today. Time to go riding.

The Pilot Power sold to www.cheaptire.com is the same tire I drop off at Bettencourts tommorow. They all come out of the same warehouse in Chicago.
Same with Parkway, Armands, Wareham, Brockton, GBM, Perf. Factor, Dunbar, etc.
The ONLY difference in a Power is whether it is made in France or Spain.
Blems will never be sold - think Firestone and the Ford Explorer. They are destroyed before they even leave the factory.

just an afterthought to all the tire talk and maybe something that should have been mentioned earlier.... there you are with 300.00 tires and rusty, dried and cracked stems. don't skip on that part, when they go bad you go back to the dealer and pay all over again.
i've only saw one bad tire for the year i worked as a service writer at a mc shop... it was not a brand name.
I carry valve stems and caps and replace them as neccessary at cost ($2 for a stem)
derek
Okay, here goes.
If I got the price to 300 for a pair of Pilot sports and 18.00 ea mount and balance, how many of you would actually come in and buy tires?
Last time some of you were in the dealership to mount tires was in 2004. Things have changed since then. Like the balancer, and four of the seven mechanics. Oh and the service manager.

Just a comment...
Why would a dealer pay more for tires then I do.
I am a business man and buy whatever I need at the cheapest place. Regular office and cleaning suppies I get from Walmart.
If I were you I would need to be shown the downside.
Note if we are talking 2% yes who cares

What dealer is going to spend 100K to get tires at the deepest discount possible?
Also, many on-line guys work on a very different business model. They are willing to make $20.00 on a tire sale and hope to make it up with volume.
Some do, but many fail.

one thing I discovered a couple days ago when researching tires online is that you may not be getting what you expect
as an example, Dunlop makes 2 grades of D220s, the OE ones have 2/32" less tread, when you order from an online dealer which ones are you getting, the cheapies I'd bet

I just got a quote at my local dealer for $401 plus tax $20, so $421, got them online for $260 shipped, had them installed for $50 instead of $150 at dealer...total savings $261 minus 1.5 gallons of gas that I used to ride there, so $255...quite a savings if you ask me...

went to my local dealer and shop. The guy at the dealer wanted $210 for the rear m3, guy at the shop wanted $200. Dealer has another shop further away that does mounting, would take a week to get the tire in. Shop would not mount if I ordered (150/60 on an ex500). The guy at the shop has a grudge with my stepfather for not selling his bike (I dont think dr 650s are rare) so that might be a reason, though I did end up with a bike he once owned for 2 years. Online, the tire was $121 shiped and I got it in 4 days do my doorstep. I see no reason for a $90 markup for a tire that must be ordered. I think part of it is a matter of the dealerships buying wholesale, instead of looking through the same books and magazines I have on my bookshelf for prices. Every single part I get, they look it up in one of the motorcycle part books that get mail ordered. Now if they were smart enough to look online, hell, they might even get a deal for buying bulk. Not to mention that half the time, the idiot behind the counter doesnt know what I want (please tell me all of you know what dog bones are....)
Lemme see ...
Dogbone ... dig up a buried dog
Dogbone ... dog digs a hole and buries a bone
Dogbone ... a wrench that was somewhat popular in the 70's that could take care of all sizes ... I called them knuckle busters.
Dogbone ... a defunct rock band
Did I get 'em all???![]()
I did hear a rumour once that some suspension geeks do
call a piece of barstock with two holes in it a dog bone.
Doesn't make any sense to me ... anyone care to confirm?![]()
