I checked out chR1s' post:
Noobie question. Looking at the photo:
Is it because the transition from the sidewall edge to the tread edge is not smooth/similar from tread block to tread block?
I attached a photo with my Q: circled - Suf Daddy
"ChR1s
Ask me why Metzeler Sportec M-1s blow."
Suf Daddy.

That is what the tire looked like only briefly into it's first street ride. Both sides of the rear tire had about a half inch of torn up looking rubber, which seemed to be more of a foam rubber -- like it was not fully cured, or the 'mix' was off. Dig a finger nail into it and chunk could easily be torn off. The bike was extremely squirrelly when healed over and the ass end would drift and break free abruptly at only moderate lean angles and throttle opening -- it was a blemished piece of shit. A typical Sportec would hold quite well, and drift in a controllable manner, and provide some feedback about what was going on -- this thing was dangerous. I brought it back to the retailer, who contacted the Metz rep -- they would not warranty it, as "Sometimes they are like that." That was the first time I've ever had a tire exhibit that crap, after about 50,000 miles on R1s, new tires every 2000-3000 miles.
Next time I'll hold a scale to the item for reference.![]()
A man who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself. - John Stuart Mill
Time for a smooooooooooookey burn out in the reps office.

..but I bet whoever was behind you during one of those 'stepping out' episodes (specifically the kind when the front follows suit) feels like he is defying fate as the best motorcycle rider in the world (when not shitting his pants)![]()
Now see if you brought better tools with you, you prolly could have harvested more of that freaky pipe-insulation type crap for evidence on the spot!![]()
Wow, the retailer wouldn't help you out either?Originally posted by ChR1s

That sux, sounds like you got a raw deal. Your pic didn't look bad at all.
Yes, it sounds like the rubber was not fully cured before it was melted and injected.

That is a strange claim............i personally have logged over 12,000mi. on my ft. sportec , w/no problems like you mentioned, musta been a bad batch huh?_________5____________
I miss ya Beet....ya Git!
I'm on my second set of M-1'S and I really like 'em. I have tried D207's, BT56's, and the stock Dunlops the bike came with(VTR1000),..205's?...which were horrible(the front anyway). Dom't know what I'll try next, but I like to experiment. Although, like I said the Metzelers have been good to me.
I still love the smell of burnt racing fuel in the morning!
