A bike I'm looking at has been towed several times on one of these, with the drive chain in place:
I've seen a lot of posts saying that this can do damage if the chain is not first removed, but I have yet to find a post referring to an actual situation where this has caused damage. If I ride the bike and it feels fine, should this still be a dealbreaker?
Have you ever pulled in the clutch going 65+. did that do any damage?

The concern raised from that is if the tranny is lubricated via an oil bath (fine) or via the oil pump. If the engine isn't running and it is an oil pump system, then it would be effectively like running the transmission dry. Usually this isn't the case though, most motorcycle transmissions are oil bath lubrication.

I read a debate somewhere on this...I think the issue wasn't damage, it was unnecessary wear and tear on your chain and sprockets, countershaft rod (and seals), rear wheel bearings and rear tire. But if you think about it, it's just like putting mileage on the bike without the strain of the motor....
