Take a look at a Superhawk. You can find them for aorund $5K all day. With Heli-Bars and a Sargeant seat I've ridden mine over 500 miles in a day. I'm not going to say it was comfortable but not torture either. 1-200 mile rides are a piece of cake.

I've had my 2000 X1 with the race kit for about 2 years, a Buell is not for everyone - it is what it is. I like the sound, hole shot and yes even the looks.
(can't post pics yet)
It needs 2-3 more gears, only revs to 7k (it doesn't even like being near 7k), at 4K in 5th your only doing 82mph. oh ya, the seat temp in warm weather will burn a hole in your large intestine. I still like it though..
Just get a 91-98 Ducati 900ss. You wont regret it.

semi update, rode a buell xb12r the other day. man that bike is awesome. not exactly the fastest thing in the world but i could care less about top end. rode it around town and some back roads and it was really responsive, but i think id need more time to figure out what gear im supposed to be in, used to being on a 600, powerbands are kinda different. but bike was pretty comfortable. and the sound, o man the sound, made my 600 sound like ass. dont think ill ever go back to a 4 cyl. v twin is a def. this winter.
as a former buell owner and racer i'll agree that stepping from a jap multi to a buell takes abit of adjustment. buells are thier own unique animals. they don't really ride like anything else i've ridden. i suppose that is why they are a love, hate bike.
If you do definitely go Buell get a race kit installed, I rode a new one at a demo day in MHT and it seemed slower. the pipe sounds much better too

Don't know how much it helps but I love my RC51, Picked it up, an 03, in a little rough shape with 16k miles for $5,500
I think I saw it best described as being heavier and slower, but its worth it for the "character"
I can agree to that, even though I couldnt quite put my finger on it. Its just a fun bike, and I LOVE the sound.
Seat is harder than plywood though.
