Does anyone have one of these screw on vortex caps? My bike came with one and today it was kinda hot/real sunny and when I loosen it a bit it spews out little bits of gas and hisses. I feel like it should be vented alittle better, maybe I'm just paranoid and used to tubes coming out of dirtbike tank?
sorry for the lame question![]()
Don't most tanks have another vent besides the cap? I wouldn't worry if yours does. If it doesn't well...
I've heard similar complaints on the Vortex caps.
A HUGE PROBLEM.
His bike died at speed and he crashed HARD!

I believe the Vortex caps use the same vent system as my Slingshot setup. Take the cap off, and then remove the base from the tank. You'll find there are two small allen set screws, one on each side of the assembly. Behind each screw is a spring and ball bearing. These are your vents. One is for vacuum, one is for overpressure.
Remove the set screw, spring, and ball bearing. Clean the hole out, apply light grease, and reassemble. You can then use a small wire like a straightend paper clip to 'work' the ball bearing up and down in it's tube. If it resists or sticks, you'll need to clean the bore better.
o damn...I'll have to check it out further, it really doesn't feel like there is much pressure release if any...argh
wow, I thought when I unscrewed mine and it shot into the air was normal. seriously.
It's a little bit of a flawed design, the other spot that'll cause trouble is the cap itself. If you crank it on there, you create too much of a seal, and even with the vents working, they can't function thanks to the cap cutting off their vent area.
The problem is worse for gravity fed carb'd bikes like mine... it only takes a little vacuum to stop it from flowing gas... I'm going to have to defeat one of the vents to prevent fuel starvation on my bike.
Unfortunatly they look pretty but thats it. Because there is so little thread left with the o-ring you dont get much of turn on it.
I just removed the one off an SV650s for the same reason. It is a solid base no vent's no pressure relief valve.
Mine hisses too. never had a gas starvation problem.
If all else fails, Lean more....
I am all set with those things, I have one on my SV racebike but it has a Check Valve drilled in to it.
I had one of those on my Race hawk When the bike got hot it would vapor lock and send no gas to the carbs, (hawk does not have a tank vent) I was hauling in the GTL Third place Down shifted into the bowl and as I was realeasing the clutch the bike shut off. I got Wasted end of season Broke all the Metacarpal in my left hand.
It was hard to diagnose because as soon as the bike cooled down it would run like normal.

Fucking piece of shit caps.
I put one on my Hawk (with the VTR1000 Superhawk tank) and bike never ran right again after that. Had all types of fuel flow problems and from reading this thread, apparently it's a common thing. Had to switch to the stock Hawk tank and then I could never ride the bike as fast (hated that tiny tank).
FU VORTEX CAP!!!

So is there no other company who makes a halfway decent screw off gascap? I'm surprised.

Hey Dan, thanks again for letting me have your old Vortex gascap.
