Wearing a helmet has almost nothing to with if you will survive and accident!

Found this gem in the current edition of Oxx Cycle (Letters to the Editor):

And for that you give up your two most important senses to driving, vision and hearing!......If you feel wearing a helmet makes you safe then by all means wear one but don't imply somehow I'm not as smart as you by not wearing one.
I have a response all typed up and I spoke with the editor about printing it in the next edition.

I hope I get to meet this guy someday...

He is forgetting that a full face helmet will greatly reduce the odds of you grinding your face off if you slide instead of impact.

I don't even know what to say to that. That has to be one of the dumbest things I've ever read. Wow.

I won't use his choice to not wear a helmet to make assumptions of his intelligence, I will just use his whole argument.

There's that side of it as well.

My response pretty much asked if one would rather take a baseball bat to the head wearing a helmet or not wearing a helmet

Two things are certain based on the entire entry in the magazine:

    He's on a cruiser-type scooter (Extra credit: It's a Hardley)

His head hasn't hit pavement (Extra Credit: He did, however, fall from the very top of the "Stupid Tree")

HAHA I read the same thing and was going to send a reply then I figured why waste my time or energy. I would obviously be trying to change the mind of a persone that thinks helmets kill and I would not beable to convince him otherwise. That magizne cater to the Harley crowd, I have no idea why or how I got on the mailing list.

    Lee,
I don't think they cater to the Harley-types in particular with regards to the last few issues I've read. However, I will agree there seems to be an overabundance of "Harley-esque" comments and articles intertwined with the occasional kneedragging/ sport-oriented print for the sport-type riders.

Still, I vote for the baseball bat theory. Which hurts LESS...helmet or not helmet...

My reply would simply be: Sounds to me like you've hit your head a few too many times w/o wearing a helmet already.

... the guy ALMOST has a point though... hit anything at more than 15-20mph DIRECT IMPACT & you're gonna get pretty effed up... but that sort of impact rarely happens. Usually you just hit your head on the ground & even at 80mph or more, the vertical speed component can't be much more than 5-10mph.

Shit, i went face first into the ground at about 75-80mph at Loudon last year & my helmet came out of it pretty well... still racing with it, in fact. (the majority of the impact was to the face sheild, the helmet itself is in pretty good shape)

I hear what you're saying but at that point in time nothing will save your spine from being crushed or fractured.

Had I not worn my helmet, two possible outcomes from my crash (way back in the day):

    1) Vegetative state

    2) Death

I mean, this guy is probably the same guy that will argue that seat belts are dangerous because they can hang people.

    Your all stupid!

Helmets are more dangerous because they are heavy and cause your head to exelerate faster to the ground. Then if you slid feet first it could get caught on anything and rip your head off!

it's obvious that this moron has never worn a helmet, otherwise he would know that he is spewing diarrea of the mouth

as everybody knows, I am not a gear nazi, the reason I prefer a full hemet when rideing is cause I have better vision without wind getting in the corner of my eyes and hearing with a hemet is better imho cause you don't have as much wind noise to contend with, heck most peeps can hear better with ear plugs

however if he'd said that wearing a helmet restricts you range of head motion (with some helmets more than others) I would have agreed with him

Leave him alone. If it weren't for the anti-gear folks, the rest of us would not be able to depend on great skin graft technology if the day every comes that our gear gives up half way through a slide. Not to mention how much they can help the terminally ill through organ donation.

I read that letter as well, and all it did was solidify my thoughts on OxxCycle.

That magazine is the biggest piece of trash I get in the mail. The articles are horrible, and it's junior high writing at best. On 2nd thought...maybe it all has to do with the audience they target.

I was pumped to get a free mag about NH motorcycling at first, but their article on racing / track days really turned me off. They didn't have a single picture of NHIS or any LRRS races. It's right in your backyard, your doing an article on it - and you can't even get a pic of the track?? Pathetic.

The mag is headed straight for the trash now. It's not worth my time to even read the captions.

    We say something like this:

YouTube - Billy Madison - Everyone is now dumber

In fact, Bergs should cite this in his letter/email. I actually read a judge's ruling for a bankruptcy case where he actually cited this, word for word. No shit.
