When I bought my DRZ SM last summer everyone told me it was a great platform, but a real underperformer and that a couple of quick modifications it could be fantastic. I rode it for 5 months and made a list of things that I thought would make it great. Thumpertalk was a great resource and after about 5 months I had a long list of parts and was ready to get started.
Here is the bike before the project started.
I got a chance to break in the new workspace (read garage and big thanks to my wife for parking outside for most of this)
The first project was a full pipe (Yosh Ti) rejet and an airbox mod, basically a big whole through the top.
Next were the forks and rear shock GMD style
Then the radiator guards (gotta have a little bling bling), New Bars with a bling scotts damper, SS brake lines, new brake and clutch levers, handguards, grips, crash bobbins, a MCCT, rear light setup and some other goodies.
Overall the main point was the pipe and rejet, suspension and brake lines. Everything else was more for fun.
This project was a great learning experience for me. I had never changed my own oil before buying this bike and to be doing work on the carb have the forks, shock and bars off and be hands on with everything was great. For many it may have been a days work but it was more like a 2 month project to get everything as close to perfect as possible. The bike runs great (as far as I can tell in 30 degree temps), it handles like it should and the low end power makes it feel like its got at least 50HP!
I really want to thank Degsy for helping me with this bike. We must have spent 40 hours or more working on it and countless more with me bugging him about it. He really showed me how things work and spent so much time doing things that would have taken him a fraction working on his own. He may deny it, but he really does like Kosher food.

SWEET! love the color
Really slick, I like how the radiator guards complement the main color.

Seriously, that bike looks great. Now I see why you didn't want to mess around with it in the dirt.
