So I take it the police presence down there is still nuts?
Now remember kids no passing on solid yellow lines, that's a no no. And no passing in construction zones, that got me pulled by a good ol southern boy.
On the blue ridge pkwy you want to watch out for white ford vans...those aren't something you want to pass either.
It was fun when I was down there, long ago. No cops, aside from the Sheriff.
Me and a few other riding buddies definitely what to do a trip down this year. Early September would probably be a great time to go down. Less traffic, easier to get time off, Hoping i can get a week off
Theres a Lot of great roads in that Area i want to hit, the gap, Rt 160 and theres another one right over the Tennessee Border that i cant think of ATM.
We are definitely going to hit the skyline drive and the Parkway in VA. on the way down
I'm Talk to them and be in touch. We would probably have truck, small trailer and tents.

Ride to live, live to ride
When I went down this past September, barely saw any cops during the week. They start coming in from all over on Friday, and are in force for the weekend. So you want to do the Gap during the middle of the week, and everywhere else on the weekends. From what little riding I did(bike issues) Rt28 was awesome, probably better than the Gap cause no traffic and sweet sweepers.
And +1 on the no crossing double yellow. That got me my only ticket there. Slow ass cagers. Only pass if waved by and the car(or bike) pulls over, it's ok then.
Care full of the locals down there.
Them in there little 4 cyl. (Place hillbilly vehicle here) are likely to ride faster on most them roads than most can even do on a bike...
I shit you not!:![]()
Anybody ever ride "Devils drop" (N.C.)rt 155................VERY twisty also.
I miss ya Beet....ya Git!
The cops will also run unmarked cars through the gap going stupidly slow to get people to pass, then they radio the tags ahead.
Do the TN state police still patrol the gap illegally? Last I heard they still didn't have jurisdiction in the gap itself, yet they were the ones handing out tons of tickets.
Sounds like a road I know of in NY...steer clear of it on weekends, weekdays yer set.
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Depends on when and stuff. A lot of stuff. I actually bailed on a gap trip last summer.
Sounds like lotsa people are interested, I honestly don't think this area is a "the more the merrier" kinda place.
If people were going to ride in smaller groups, then get together in the evenings tocool, but a large group doesn't interest me, not down there. Guess we'll see
You don't have to ride in a large group... drinking and campside debauchery will be done in a large group! The lake is walking distance!

Thanks...I'll keep an eye on this thread.
I could probably be persuaded to go as long as work is not crazy or I am out of the country playing on bases & black hawks...
or racing.

Close your eyes, look deep in your soul, step outside yourself and let your mind go.
I'd assume it would NOT be on a race weekend.
Should go to Fontana and stay during the R1/R6 Forum convention. Starts June 7th -13th.

I rode the Gap mid-week in Sept of 2008. It was off-season for riding Blue Ridge, which meant mostly unobstructed riding (North from the Gap). And riding the Gap mid-week meant there were fewer on the road, including Police presence.
Whenever you choose to go, mid-week will be better than Fri-Sun.
Also, there is a lot of good riding in that region that does not include the Gap. In some ways I think the approach on 129 was more fun than the Gap itself.
I loved it so much that I quit my job and moved down here. I live about an hour and a half from the Cherohala. Got a good job and really like it.
If you rent a local room ... plenty of options for that, do your riding on the Gap before 10am or after 5pm. There is over a hundred great roads for daytrips for the rest of the day.
Two Wheel Inn has great hot showers and a mini garage to stash or work on your bike. Great people that are very motorcycle oriented. Fontana is a great place for rallys as when the sun goes down, the parties start ... those that party don't start riding till one in the afternoon.
It is not a racetrack and anyone that treats it as such will get what they deserve and probably take some other rider out with them. No margin for mistakes at speed.
As for the Cherohala, a ticket there is a federal offense and you have to go to federal court in Atlanta ... federal lawyers are not cheap and a second trip down for a court appearance will be very expensive and painful.
If loud pipes save lives, imagine what learning to ride would do.
Been there 4 years in a row with the BoRN crew since 06, this will be the first year i dont go...

Tell that to the dood that came screaming through on a race bike. He had number plates instead of lights, no tag, all done up with decals from sponsors and everything. Guess he needed more practice heh.
I did not know this and luckily it started pouring on us, because we were definitely committing federal offenses. Oops.
So is my favorite pic still on display in the CoT ???

It's well worth it to check out US 421 "The Snake" in Shady Valley TN. It's on the way to the gap (about 2 hrs north). IT's about 10 mins off the hwy through Bristol TN. The riding is just as good as the Gap minus the amount of THP and squids. There are 4 roads that head up into the mountains from Shady Valley... excellent riding. I lived down there to ride every day for about a year and i prefered the Snake over the Gap anyday. RT 181 "The Cats Tail" in NC is another excellent road.
And Blood Mtn in GA.

Blood Mountain is now a major speed trap.
Too many fatalities and lots of complaints from that bookstore on the top of the mountain.
Like the Gap, it pays to ride once through it slowly to scout it out first.

I want to go!
I got screwed out of going before
I need to go.
