Thanks to those of you who have signed up for this ride (including those who signed on for the prior two dates that we had to move) so far. Once again I wanted to provide you with a bit of information regarding the cause you’re helping out with. For those of you lurking around this ride, please consider signing on this week. Below you’ll see a short excerpt from a health status update Drew’s mother e-mailed out last week. As you know, medical insurance isn’t the same as it was years ago. There are lots of out of pocket expenses for even what we would consider routine medical care. In the case of the type of illness Drew and his family are fighting, the out of pocket expenses are enormous….. beyond comprehension & what any of us would want to figure out how to deal with. Every extra rider helps here, thanks for considering joining.


Today, we received our 3rd green light for another week off from Children's. We can't tell you what a relief it is to have the rest of the week away from there. We also received an "okay" for Drew to go apple picking with us this weekend. We still have to be really careful with his risk for injury and bleeding and he cannot eat the apples at the orchard and we'll probably have him wear gloves, but still! He's really looking forward to it.

Unfortunately, his platelets and red blood cells are still low. We saw Drew's team today of Dr. Williams and Alli and Dr. Williams has initiated the preparatory process for a bone marrow transplant. We meet with Drew's hematology team and the transplant team on October 13th. In the meantime, the official search is on for a donor and Drew will begin some preliminary testing in anticipation. The time frame is approximately 6-8 weeks from now. We certainly always knew this was a possibility but it's still heavy on our hearts at what Drew will go through. His illness is severe and those kids tend to respond slower if they do go into remission. We can still pray for that. But for now, Dr. Williams doesn't want to wait to begin the process any longer and we have to trust him.

Drew wasn't really paying attention to most of this discussion today and truly, the transplant team will probably want to sit down with him and go over things in a 10 year old manner and give him a tour of the transplant unit. We don't plan on saying anything to him unless he specifically asks us a question. Our hearts ache more when we realize that the time frame will probably mean that Drew will spend his birthday and holidays in the hospital. As for us, the emotional price is high. We both think we're going to need "youth transplants" to replace the years that have been taken off us during this time. Just as we almost got comfortable with our new way of life, another speed bump looms ahead and it's a big one. We still occasionally grapple with why this had to happen but for the most part have been recharged at just getting Drew healthy again. It's going to be a long road. Its looking good for tomorrow! Just to set expectations, this will be about 150 miles of nice central NH Roads! Pace will be laid back but it won't be a 'parade lap'! We have a special guest running the riders meeting...you won't want to miss that!
