I just had an OH SHIT moment today.
On the way into work this morning the fuel light came on. No problem I have .9 gallons of gas remaining. I’ll just fop into the Mobil gas station on the way home. It’s along the way as I approach 93 south.
I get out of work and light come on. Fine no problem, thanks for the reminder. I pull into the gas station and begin searching thru the tank bag. Left pocket, nothing. Right pocket, nothing. The big part, nothing. Shoot, where is it? Then I remember. Last night I went to Advanced Auto Parts to find some radiator hoses for the HAWK. I got home and brought everything downstairs. But did I remember to bring the wallet up after I was done working on the HAWK. I guess not. Shoot now what. 27.7 miles home maybe .7-.8 gallons is remaining. Oh don’t forget I am in Medford and I need to get to Rockland and it’s 3:15. Hell anything is possible with traffic at this time. I have a little reprieve as I can use the hove lane. All right lets do it.
I head out and try to catch any draft doing 60mph. Save fuel, Save fuel, Save fuel. I get to the top of the Zakim Bunker Hill Bridge and let it pretty much roll well into the tunnel. No traffic. Good. I get to the end of the tunnel and there it is. DAMN traffic. So I sit in it and it’s slightly moving. Petty consistent 5-10 I get beyond the fortress building and things pick up a bit more to 30’s. Good. I’m moving forward at low RPM’s. I make it to the HOV lane. Nice. “I hope I don’t stall.” I don’t want to be one of those people clogging up the HOV lane. 55mph. Good. There was one moment I thought I was running out. I just rolled off.
I’m in Braintree. NO Traffic. I camp behind a Red F250 @60mph. Come on Weymouth. Yes. Come on Norwell. Yes. One more. Come on Rockland. YES… I’m on the home stretch, less than 2 miles remaining. I ease her home. I have never felt so much pressure, what a sigh of relief when I pulled into the drive way.
I go immediately downstairs and find the wallet right where I left it. MORON. Well I need gas now. The station is 1 mile away. DO I do it or take the truck. What the hell. It’s only 1 mile. If I have to push it it’s only a short distance and the last ¼ is downhill. Bikes starts up with no problem and venture into the station with no problem. I pump 4.667 gallons into the tank, right to the very top. Man, I have never put that much into the tank. I get her home and wonder how much the tank holds. I pull out the repair manual and open the fuel section and find the tank holds 4.7 gallons. DO THE MATH .033 gallons is what was left in the tank. WOW can you say FUMES.

I could actually feel chest pains building as I read that. There are few feelings worse than the hopelessness of having no gas and no means of getting more.
2 years ago while on my Deals Gap vacation I left the house and headed west on the Cherohala to Telleco Plains knowing I would need gas when I got there. my fuel light started flashing about 10 miles before I got there
when I get to the gas station and pull up to the pump I reach in my front pocket for my wallet
yep, forgot it
I managed to find a few quarters dimes & pennies and scraped up enuf to buy about $1.25 worth of gas barely enuf to make the fuel light stop flashing for 5 miles
I figured I had enuf it I took it easy to make it to the North Carolina line and I could coast the rest of the way
somehow luck and the fuel economy gods were3 on my side that day, I made it back
now, I always have a $20 in the ziplock with my registration and insurance card

It was my ride and what an event.
As I finished typing this I went out and put $ into the trunk. I don't want this to happen again.
Good suggestion everyone.
