Yeah, I rode the Gap and the Snake on a trip I took earlier this year and, while the Dragon was great, the Snake was greater, IMO...and for the exact reasons you mention. I was comfortably more able to enjoy full cornerspeed and wound up taking an extra day to ride there.
181 is a lot of fun...low traffic..up in the Mts....pretty much only one cop (and i know where he sits ) ...long beautiful sweepers...it's a two lane road for a good distance in the fun twisty stuff so if there's is traffic you don't have to worry about passing. It's a very fun relitively safe road that not too many people know about (a.k.a no squid scene)

It's worth a visit at least once

How did you get to the Snake? Interstate 81, get off in Bristol TN?

This road is east of 421 on the other side of Elisabethen

I was coming up from the South so I went on I-40 from Asheville. I had to beat feet to meet someone in the am. So it was I-40 thru town to 181 to 226 (Blue Ridge Pkwy) to 221 to 421 or something close to that.

Yeah ...i won't hold you to it cause i know you still have to work the details out but that would be fine with me. I would share the travling expenses to make it worth your while.

Do you have plans in May?

    It's sounding like Mother's Day weekend...15th - 17th.
