I would assume its constituted as an illegal pass, which would be $100. You can't pass on the right even if the car in front of you is stationary and signaling left. Until they actually initiate the turn is when you can legally pass. From my understanding at least.

Aaron, I'd fight the ticket if I were you. I've gotten out of a little worse then that before.

^ didnt know that. Thought as long as there was room to pass and it was safe to do so then it was ok. Could have sworn i read this in the drivers manual.

i looked through the drivers manual and found on page 91 (page 13 of chpt 4):

Special rules for motorcycles:
• Do not ride along pavement lines, between lanes of traffic.
• Ride no more than two abreast.
• Unless your motorcycle can travel safely at minimum posted speeds, do not travel on highways or expressways.

however, M.G.L. 89-4A says

Chapter 89: Section 4A. Driving vehicles in a single lane; motorcycles, riding and passing

Section 4A. When any way has been divided into lanes, the driver of a vehicle shall so drive that the vehicle shall be entirely within a single lane, and he shall not move from the lane in which he is driving until he has first ascertained if such movement can be made with safety. The operators of motorcycles shall not ride abreast of more than one other motorcycle, shall ride single file when passing, and shall not pass any other motor vehicle within the same lane, except another motorcycle.

my particular issue is that i wasn't between the lanes (both lanes were to my left), and i didn't cross any breakdown lanes or shoulder lines. a quick check of google-maps street view confirms that there are no shoulder markings or fog lines. (eastbound lane, cop was right behind the pole suspending the traffic light Google Maps - Street View)

If noone has plans of where to go I'm thinking a little bit further north. There are some well known decent roads up around Alton, Gilford, Laconia, up through Warren, N. Woodstock, and of course the Kank over to N. Conway to Hurricane Mtn. Road.

I'm planning a small group ride up through the above mentioned places on Friday. The Friday plans developed suddenly due to work restrictions of those of us that do have jobs; of course, after I mentioned Thursday earlier in the thread. If anyone's interested in changing the date; or even doing two rides you're welcome to join my group on Friday.

We could do a smaller, more local ride Thursday and head up north into NH for Friday.


Also in unrelated news: I'm heading to Northfield NH Saturday morning to hit up Highland Mountain - Mountain Bike Park, if anyone else is interested. The mountain is opening for the year on Friday -- click on the trails in the picture to see a YouTube video of people riding the trail.
