Dear Loudon Road Racer,
All of us here at NHMS and LRRS hope that winter is being good to you and your families. We are sure you are really looking forward to spring and getting back to riding, we are looking forward to having you back, as well.
I see that most of you have renewed your licenses, and that is a great sign that warmer weather is on its way! Those of you who have not renewed your license, there is still time, but remember, you are not guaranteed the same number. In fact, you may not have the choice of any number you like. We don’t want that now, do we?
We have been working hard to gear up for the 2011 season. We have made some changes again this year, and we know change is not easy (or always welcome) but please understand that we are simply trying to improve the series and we try to live by the standard of “Nothing ventured, nothing gained.”
First of all, we are going to continue the online registration for the 2011 season. The Zoomius system worked great last year; yes, there were a few “growing pains” at first, but by the end of the season we had it down to a science. You have all provided some great feed back and we are pleased that the majority of you really liked it and found it easy to use. The live streaming of lap times seems to be a huge hit.
We will also continue to provide you with a complimentary infield pass if you pre-register for 3 or more races during each event. In order to be considered a “pre-entry” you must register online by midnight of the Sunday preceding the event. We will be sending out the email reminders of when registration is open and when the pre-reg cut-off is.
Now, here comes the real news: After much deliberation and thought, we have decided that we will be doing something different with the Novice rider classification for 2011. There are good reasons why and we will explain them here. LRRS developed the Novice class many years ago due to the overwhelming number of race entries as a way to keep the grids more manageable and for the most important reason, rider safety.
All the other road racing organizations, including CCS, and other race sanctioning bodies and facilities, have only 2 rider classifications: Amateur and Expert. We are not eliminating the Novice class, but we
are limiting the number of races. There will be 4 classes for Novice; Ultra-Light weight, Lightweight, Middleweight, Heavyweight. We are doing this for the following reasons:
a. To encourage rider advancement while at the same time making a place for the newest racers to become comfortable and “get into their groove”. We understand that not every rider is cut out to be a road racer and we have kept the Novice class to allow newer riders to feel it out and have a chance to see if they have what it takes, or time to decide if it is something they want to stick with in a place that feels safe.
b. To streamline the race day. We have run a lot of classes over the last few years and the days can be very long. There are not enough entries or participants on the grids to justify so many classes as there were in the past.
c. To stay consistent with other road racing organizations. Many of you like to go to NJMP or other tracks and this will help to have riders classified in the appropriate group.
d. There is a possibility that we may run LRRS events in conjunction with another facility in the future and in order to do so, we need to formulate the series to fit better at other venues.
Of course, as this change is implemented, we need to change the requirements for rider advancement. Current Novices may or may not qualify for advancement to Amateur; the following is a guideline to determine if a current Novice is moving up to Amateur status for the 2011 season. Basically, if you were racing as a Novice in 201, and you were racing in the top 5 for your class, you will most likely be moving up to Amateur.
Novice to Amateur - Novice is considered a provisional class and has no minimum number of races required before advancement. Novice riders must show a good safety record to be considered for advancement. Riders will be moved to Amateur as soon as they are consistently able to run lap times at the thresholds set by LRRS for their particular class or at the discretion of the officials. The lap time thresholds for advancement may be adjusted at any time during the course of the season.
Starting Advancement Thresholds for 2011
Novice Heavyweight - 1:23
Novice Middleweight - 1:23
Novice Lightweight - 1:26
Novice Ultralightweight - 1:27
For weekends that have track conditions that significantly affect lap times (rain), Novices seeking advancement may petition the officials and must run times within 112% of the fastest time set in the corresponding Expert class run under the same conditions. Dry lap times (from any previous race) will be factored into this decision as well.
Amateur to Expert - Amateur riders must show a good safety record to be considered for advancement to expert. Amateurs must compete in a minimum 15 races and score 400 points within a 12 month period. LRRS reserves the right to deny Expert Status to any Amateur who meets the criteria for advancement and has not shown the ability or experience for Expert competition. Amateur can consistently run times within 107% of the fastest time (lap record) set in the corresponding Expert class may petition for early advancement.
Novice Classes - Novices are eligible to ride in one class per day, per motorcycle. There will be four Novice classes run each day; Heavyweight, Middleweight, Lightweight and Ultralightweight. Riders must enter for the lowest displacement class that their motorcycle is eligible for and "riding up a class" is not allowed. The rules for each class will be based on a similar standard CCS class.
Novice Heavyweight - GTO
Novice Middleweight - GTU
Novice Lightweight - GTL
Novice Ultralightweight - Ultralightweight Superbike
CHAMPION RACE CERTIFICATES - For those of you who placed 2nd or 3rd in the 2010 Championships; we will be mailing out the race certificates next week. Please accept our apologies for the wait, this is the first time we are doing it “in-house” and with snow days, meetings and other variables we have been a bit behind in this task.
We are currently working on expanding the fuel rule to include onsite Sunoco Street Legal Pump fuel as well as a full line of Sunoco Race Fuels along with the Line of VP Race Fuels which has previously been recognized as legal fuels for LRRS competition. Once the details are finalized we will get all of this information out to you.
In the meantime, if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Not that I'm anyone, but I think those're great ideas. And for once, LRRS has good reasoning to make the adjustments...
Now if they could just get the infield speakers to work...

Not sure I like the 1 race per day per bike and no racing up a class for novices, but otherwise I like the idea.

Ok I will say it in this thread too. Not sure I like the idea of 1 race per day and no racing up a class for NV, but otherwise I definitely agree with what they are doing and why.

So as a novice I can only run one race per day with my bike. That means I'm not eligable to run three races and get the free infield pass. Bummer. I'm also not psyched about driving from VT to only be able to run in two races over the course of two days at the track. I feel an early bump coming on, or another bike...

The 3 race, free infield pass thingy sucks for me.... not enough races for me....

I think its a smart move, and certainly makes sense. For you NV guys it definitely encourages you to move up and compete as a racer in more serious competition if you wish to do so, and still allows the NV class to give the "Is racing for me or not?" guys a chance to test the waters safely. And with the lap time thresh holds, closing speeds in AM/EX shouldn't be a crazy issue.

The main problem I see with this is the lack of track time the novices will have. I know me personally, it took a full year of 4 races a weekend to even feel remotely ready for AM. Now people are gonna either lose a ton of track time, or bump before they're necessarily ready. It might be one thing if AM and EX were split, so AM had to deal with not quite ready people, but all the experts are gonna be dive bombing these people.
Plus the idea that the costs to do max 2 races per weekend is going to turn off a lot of people. Its already expensive as it, and I always viewed it adding more races makes it worth it when you figure in the infield pass and travel. I'm not sure Id find it worth it.
Just to clear up a little misprint in there (I did not put this release together but I did give input to how these changes would come together for next year)...
Novices can run 3 classes per weekend per bike. 100% for sure. That change was made recently and did not get worded properly in the release. There will be 2 races Sunday and 1 race Saturday and everyone will have 3 classes no matter what bike you have. So, you will be able to get your free pit pass, etc....
I'm not a frequent board guy, so I may not see any responses on the forum....but I did read this after it went out, saw the mistake and figured that I could help clear it up.
Thanks,
Eric Wood

In a way the change does make some sense. The grids (assuming the same number of novices as last year) will be fuller, and given I won some LWSB races as a NV on my PTwins GS500E the class lumping should provide for reasonable competition?
Edit: Wait, this also means I'll likely never make it to Expert with the new bump rules... crap!
