Hey everyone, I just got word from the Doctor's that I did in fact break ribs when I crashed skiing 2 weeks ago. Some asshat decided to stop directly in front of me, and I flew off the knowl I was headed toward face first instead of ski first..anyway, my doc says to find a good rib/chest protector for racing..something STRONG, like carbon....can any of my fellow racer bro's recommend a good thorasic exoskeleton type device? That doesn't cost 1600.00! And will fit UNDER my leathers?
Thanks in advance to all the guy's that speak up. It is greatly appreciated.

Actually, a bull riding vest is a really good idea. If you need help finding one, let me know.![]()
what about mx chest protectors?
thats what i was thinking of getting to hide my sore rib

Yah, EVS makes a sweet ballistic grade plastic with bio foam inner chest and rib protector for MX, but I dunno if it'll fit UNDER the leathers..
An actual bull riding vest? Highside, are you serious? Pete said it too, but I thought it was a brand name..like all the other whack brand names out there now...

Tony Iannarelli, Gus Holcomb, and Dan Murphy all wear bull-riding vests that they had a backprotector sewn on the back.
It most definitely will NOT fit under your leathers without alteration (unless you were already swimming in them to begin with).
Note that all four have custom fitted suits as well (Tony wear Syed, Gus and Dan wear Vanson)
Bull riding vests have flat plates of kevlar, and are VERY tough - a 2,000 lb. bull putting a horn into your gut requires a certain measure of strength.![]()
Most of them are pretty small in comparison to an MX-type vest, although they are usually big enough that you would indeed have to have some alteration done to your jacket. But it would do a great job of protecting your ribs.
And, as an additional plus, motorcycles rarely slip their horns through the arm opening of your vest and drag you around a dirty arena while kicking you in the ass.![]()
Hmmm... I'm not really sold on the chest protector idea. When I broke my ribs on the track, it wasn't from a direct hit to the ribs, rather my whole chest cavity compressing farther than it should from stopping too quickly.
OK, if you bike hits you, the chest armor would be key. I'm just sayin' it may not do the job in most situations.
Kind of like pads for your collarbone. Usually it breaks when you land on you elbow...
I guess more padding is always better...
See I fully agree with you Paul, but right now my shit is broken, so at least for the first coupla weekends, I need to take precautionary measures..sooo, you got any ideas Paul? C'mon...give em up man..I know you got some...![]()

Bohn body armor is the obvious one. They advertise in the back of all the moto rags.
There was a guy (much maligned) making nice chest armor called rhino, but no one wanted to do business with him, and I don't know what happened. I know I thought the product looked great, and it was very thin profile.
I don't use any, but if you find something that is not bulky, I'd consider using it...
Hey all, check this out...won't mess with your back protector, and has bio foam AND plastic, AND is thin as hell too!

I use the rhino armor. not sure if you can still get it though, I bought mine second hand. It includes a large back-protector that has armor covering the spine including the tailbone, and armor over the kidneys and shoulderblades. A chest-protecter and inserts for hip-armor. It seems alittle bulky at first with chest protection, but you get used to it. If you can find a set I highly recommend the stuff. I've only had 2 crashes but both times I landed and slid on my back which has made me a BIG believer in their effectiveness. The whole set new is about $450. However, if you're already busted up, I doubt anything will save you from further injury in a crash. Until you're healed, that is.

I've got the Spyke droid suit. It's actually a 2 piece that has a metal zip at the waist. The "back-protector" that came with it was just this foam-sponge thing. I took it out and my b. protector fits fine. I purchased the suit at Seacoast Sport Cycle. Got my boots there too!![]()
