just for track days..
will it work? sure.... for how long? that's the question...does your track day org of preference allow lap timers?

I had one of those. You have to place a beacon (with permission), remember to retrieve it, and keep it batteried up. My receiver died after one track day. It's a quarter the price of a Qstarz and about 1% as useful if you want to learn WHERE you can gain speed. Looking at data when you have time to think about it reveals many surprises.

Spend the $ and get a Qstarz and you will be very happy!

I always suggest, if you have a go-pro, using the time stamp as a make-shift lap timer. If you go frame by frame you can probably reach a similar level of accuracy as that $50 thing. Without a doubt you can get within the second.

Ya. I have been doing it with a gopro..
I assumed everyone put out their beacons.. I'm a newb with these . Is there a generic beacon that qstarz works with?
Qstarz is beaconless. It uses GPS rather than a fixed position beacon.
ok so i assume their gps technology is excellent.. that said, i was using a free phone app that was GPS and it lied to me.. made me feel like less of a man. !!!!
so are the majority of yous racing using beaconless lapt timers?
I haven't tried one. I have heard that there are sometimes "errors" in the gps location data. I have heard that some people have written custom software to help "filter" these errors from the data that qstarz produces.
FWIW Cell phones do NOT use real GPS
They use cellular towers in the area to triangulate position therefore they are not as accurate as GPS can and will be
And yes I would say 80-90% of us use Qstarz

Me being technical... Many cell phones use A-GPS (linky), which does use cell towers to "more quickly acquire" location data, but are equipped with GPS receivers (varies based on the implementation in the phone).
The sample rate and accuracy of the GPS receivers in most cell phones aren't as good as most "dedicated" loggers like the Qstarz.
Your point, Qstarz is better than the phone is certainly true (but it isn't perfect either, so I'm told).
Ah I see, thank you
Hmm maybe its worth mentioning then that Qstarz downloads / updates "AGPS"
