pshhh....everyone knows Jeff is fast because of his super secret $250,000 engine builds. Nobody could go that fast on a STOCK motor. NOTHING is ever stock.

We need to implement a new rule. No one can EVER use Jeff Wood in any sort of argument regarding the use or operation of a motorcycle. The mans a freak.

The point is a top rider will go slower when he has less performance to squeeze out of the bike. Someone not using anywhere close to the full potential of the bike's components will get minimal gains from upgrading them.

Yea Paul...all his personal bikes are still stock engines. Hes actually the first one that came to mind. Obviously they built motors for the Triumph but they struggled with it and blew up a bunch of them.

    Re: Engine Build Cost

Well besides the who is running what argument...

It turns out what I meant to be asking about isn't really a 'build' persay (which would involve pistons and rings and such).

Basically a disassembling, blueprinting, machining to spec, and cleaning of the head; kit valve cover gasket (thinner); slotting the cam gears, then reassembly of the head and the cam timing set.

So obviously that wouldn't be 3G.

Regardless, at full price what I just described still wouldn't be cost effective for me at my skill level... however the purpose of this thread was regarding some non-full-price opportunities..

Yes, that's a supersport build you just described, and there are more tricks and yes, it would cost 3gs to have a bike blueprinted.

you will hit your limits well before the bike. No need to spend that money in engine work right now.
Suspension first. Then ride, ride, ride, and ride some more.

1:09's on Stock Tires and a Stock bike? No WAY! Not Jeff Wood, Eric Wood, Mat Mladin or Mick Doohan. I would bet Jeff could do a 14 on stock tires on his bike... but I doubt any faster. Stock Tires will not give the grip you need to get it done.

But seriously... There are a few guys at Loudon with Superbike 600's with cams, pistons and so on.. but they are not the top guys. My personal feelings are those motors sound great on paper but dont get it done.

The motors you see the top experts at Loudon run are Supersport. Milled Head, Degree'd cams, fresh rings and bearings, good pipe, powercommander and a good map. Some run stock, my 05 ZX636 was stock in 05 and I did high 11's on it if I remember correctly.

With a supersport setup on a GSXR1000 Jeff did a 1:10.7x at Loudon. On his R6 with the above setup, he did a 1:10.9x.

Shane? He is doing it on skill... not HP. The boy can ride!! I am a fan. Are his bikes running stock engines? I doubt it.. Are they WAY Faster than a stock bike or my bike or Jeff's, No. But I doubt they are completely stock.

Motor is not the key at Loudon. A good running (read well mapped) bike and quality suspension is what EVERYONE should focus on.

As far as how much a build costs.... KWS site claims $2200.00 plus parts. They are in North Carolina a have a good reputation. BUT your gonna spend $$ to ship it there and back. Pat Doyle at New England Performance is at the track every weekend, is a good guy and does a good job. His motors are quick, and they last. AND he is Local. Sean Sweeney, I believe his price is 2000 + parts. Same deal.. he is at the track with his son is racing. He does a good job as well...and yep.. he is local. Have you motor done locally and get the support you may need at the track... u never know when you need help that someone of their caliber can provide.

Remember... what you get when you do a a supersport motor. Disassembly, inspection, reassembly with cam timing. Parts generally are new Rings, crank and rod bearings, New Rod bolts and Nuts (some times complete rod sets), valve seals, sometimes valve springs and gaskets.

Depending on the condition of your motor.... you will see good gains... Some on top but mostly in the middle. I have had many a motor be a pooch on the track but make the number on the dyno... but the acceleration is poor. Thats where you will see the most gain.

Again that is part of the equation... the other part is a good pipe, power commander and a proper map by someone who knows what he is doing.

As for the discussion on motor vs. suspension...

I will say this. Ryan S took his bike to respectable lap times (16's I believe) on a stock motor, stock suspension. He hit a solid wall at his lap times. He then invested in his program... No, not a fresh motor built to the hilt with cams, superbike pistons and Ti Rods, he spent his money on suspension. A good set of revalved forks, and a quality aftermarket shock. Next weekend... 15's if I remember correctly.

There is alot to be said about that last sentence.

    Re: Engine Build Cost

My 1000 to 1080 superbike build was about 5 grand and i did not see decrease in lap times at loudon the best was 19 flat

My 800 ss with 26 hp less i was quicker on with 18.4

Daytona was a different story where the Motor was a MUST

I have sold Narbonne 6 of the past gsxrs and they have all had stock motors just very well tuned.

    My 2 cents

Cool info from everyone, especially the breakdown from Scott. Thanks.

As I said in my first post, I know my skill level doesn't warrant anything like a motor build. I will put (and am putting) my money into suspension and bike setup first.

The only reason I was curious was because of a special offer that I have available to me. I can get it at any time though it looks like. I just wanted to have a proper number to compare it to.
