I'm currently running water wetter in my gsxr for the track, but have heard that Engine Ice is track legal and can stay in the bike all year because it freezes at a much lower temp than water. I've also heard that Engine Ice is bad for the engine...I think someone at Penguin told me that last year, but never explained why. Any advice/thoughts on this?

I don't believe it is legal. Even if it is I have heard it is very slippery. You should drain and flush your bike over the winter anyway.. Stay with the Water Wetter just my .02

I put water wetter in over the winter for my street only bike. had it back out side in the late winter/early spring si it dipped into the teens a few nights with no noticeable problems if that helps![]()

Engine Ice is legal in most racing organizations, but it IS NOT legal in LRRS. I flushed my cooling system last November and put Engine Ice in before heading down to Homestead for the CCS races in December (Engine Ice is legal in CCS). When I showed up at Loudon in April, I was told at tech to take it out because it is not allowed. I know some people that do use it and haven't been caught, but if a tech inspector actually checks your reservoir and sees it there's a chance you'll be told to remove it. It is slippery and I can tell you first hand that it doesn't work any better than Water Wetter does...

Well that depends on your definition of "works better". It doesn't work any better at cooling (water is superior to all antifreezes in this respect), but it does work better at not freezing.
Engine Ice is *still* just propylene glycol with fancy marketing. You can get this stuff at any auto parts store with a Prestone, et. al label for much less money/hassle than Engine Ice.
Prestone uses ethylene glycol. BAD
Engine Ice uses propylene glycol. Still slippery, but better for the environment. They say it's not toxic and it looks like gatorade!!!! Actually, propylene glycol is use in some medicines too!
Prestone makes a propylene glycol mix too. Pretty much all the manufacturers do, as there's lots of applications that require it like marine usage (can't kill all the fishes).
Engine Ice just takes advantage of peoples' ignorance about it's ingredients, thinking that it offers some sort of fancy ass formulation that is "specially designed for racing" or some shit.
I dump A 40 oz of St. Ides of King Cobra in there Works great and is not Slippery(Must be Malt Liquor as Beer does work as quick or effective)

Engine ice is absolutely the best coolant I've used to date. Much better than water, or water with additives. How ever when it evaporates it turns to jelly and stays slippery for hours. That, and that alone is why we don't allow it at LRRS. I've used Red Line Water Wetter and Maxima's Cool-Aide and found them to be about the same. The additives basically are a lubricant for the water pump.
The only explanation I can give for that is that your bike must warp the fabric of the universe such that physical properties in its vicinity are not as we have traditionally observed them.
I've heard that happens when you get down below the 15s.
My KTM 125 would look like a fog machine when stuck going slow, or when the radiator was clogged with mud. It would boil away water every ride. I switched to Engine ice and have not ever had it over heat, loose power or use cooant since. In fact, I have the same coolant on it from 3 years ago. I just did a new piston & ring and reused the coolant it looked so good. Water is not the best conductor of heat. Ethylene Glycol is better, so is Propylene Glycol.
That's because adding the glycol raises the boiling point of the coolant. Once the coolant boils it becomes a really shitty coolant, so by raising the boiling temperature of the coolant you're creating a larger temeperature window that your bike can run in before the coolant boils and causes catastrophic overheating.
However, pure water is still a better conductor of heat. Up to the point at which the water boils, it will remove more heat from the engine than any mixture of propylene or ethylene glycol.
I run rusty water.
Discuss.
