I am looking to pick up a lap timer for NHMS. It is my understanding that we cannot use any of the ones that require IR beacons around the track so I assume my only option is a GPS lap timer?
Can anyone recommend a decent one that isnt going to break the bank?

I've looked around a little bit and this was the best I came up with...

I haven't bought one yet so I can't recommend it but its the cheapest I've found unless you want to hook up a receiver to a old smart phone like someone else suggested.
I just picked up a couple Mini-Laps, but those use IR beacons....
Is it true that we cannot use this technology?? Specifically for TTD or Fishtail.... This would be a major bummer if its true... I do not want to invest in a full GPS timer and don't want to use my Iphone. I just want a basic timer which is why the Mini-lap was so appealing.
Please shed some light if you know the answer to this!
Not sure where the misinformation is coming from but IR is common for lap timers and will work fine so long as there is an appropriate beacon placed somewhere where the timer can pick up the signal.
We cant use traditional lap timers? I never got that memo.

Some track days don't allow timing. Others allow it and usually help coordinate who puts out a beacon. As far as I know it's up to the track day provider to determine if they allow timing and generally seem to either allow it or not, they don't segregate what type of timing. GPS lap timers are just harder to restrict.

I am selling Qstarz gps laptimers for $180. they work awesome come with alot of options
Ok forgive me if I should know this by now, but why would anyone restrict lap timer use at a track day or a race? Does it interfere with something or are they thinking it distracts riders? I've never been told that I couldn't use one, of any kind.

For track days, it's typically an insurance issue, and could void the insurance (depending on the carrier).
Track days are usually insured as "non-competitive events", and once timing is introduced, carriers feel that is a competitive inducement, thus voiding the insurance.

Not wrong, thursday test sessions used to not allow timed practices (transponders and beacons) for insurance purposes, not sure now its been a while, but penguin practice it was ok to have them out.
