I got a qstarz 818xt that was only $85 new. Works great but have nothing else to compare it to..... but I really like the 'hooker with a stopwatch' idea

I have a q6000 and I found a retailer on eBay selling them for around 380 I think. I made an offer for 310 and he took it.
Try going that route
That's a tough one. As a long term solution, the hooker does have recurring costs but she (or he) also offers additional benefits...

I like my Starlane, the less expensive lap timers (that still have a 10 hz GPS) don't display your time while you're out on a session. The starlane will give you a display, split the course into 4ths and give you a little red light if you just completed that split fastest so far that session. It really helps when you're trying to develop a better line through a session because you get that instant feedback, you don't have to pit and hook up to a laptop to get your times, then try to figure out "Ok, on lap 7 out of 12 I went fastest in section 11 of 13 sections" and exactly why you were faster on that lap of that part of the track.
I think the QStars makes one with a screen also (maybe listed here, I didn't research everything people posted) that would do the same thing. Also, if you race, the MyLaps transponder we use at loudon said they are coming out with a display for the lap timer's reading, so that's pretty promising.
The Starlane has a lot more features than just laptimes, even the base 3x can do data acquisition for RPM, Gear, Linear Travel (suspension travel measurement) and Brake Pressure Measurement. So if you're interested in getting that data (overlayed onto your GPS data and you can even sync up video to this in the starlane software,) the Starlane is worth the extra cost.
Just a few things, the Starlane isn't perfect. I found their "automatic finish line detection" to be utter and absolute garbage, the system just won't learn the track. You have to either tell it where the line is by rolling the bike out there (most accurate) or picking points on a map either before the track (inaccurate) or after you have run on the track and have a track log (probably middle accuracy.) Also, sometimes it won't register a lap and you look down and see like 2:30min when you're running 1:22, so obviously it got confused there for a bit. I've noticed when you get back to the pit it has figured things out though and fixed the times.
I've gone through two starlanes for different issues and am currently using a QStarz Q6000. Only issue I've had with the Q6000 is once the battery get below 25% it stop tracking.

"Speed has a kind of affinity for me, it's the time God and I have our little talks."
That would be great.
I did manage to get the software installed and uploaded the *bcn files from Mad Monkey Speed for NHMS (12 & 5 splits) as well as the '07 r6 *.rcn file, but that's about it. In the software, I saw a whole bunch of pretty, multi-colored lines that seemed to form the shape/outline of NHMS...
Understood.

I've got the bt-q1000. You can only see the info when you download it in qracing. I think it gives a lot of info if you can compare it to a faster rider. You can see your braking points, acceleration, corner speed, and how they all affect your times. It's the area that's under the curve that's important. More area = more average speed = lower lap times. Obviously accelerating harder, braking later and carrying more corner speed = faster lap times, but with a gps lap timer you can tell which one you need to work on. If you have good corner speed, but slow times it can show you that you need to work on braking later or getting on the gas sooner. If you have sloping speed curves it can show you that your letting off too early. If you have early peaks and low corner speeds it can show that you're charging the turn and braking too early and not trail braking.
Pretty sure I'm not going to make njmp before next lrrs round. I'll catch up with ya @ next lrrs round.
In the mean time, how do you have your Q6000 mounted (pic illustrating it would be nice)? I was going to use one of those plates that mounts to the top of the fork tube, but then read you want to make the unit as vertical as possible so the 3-axis g-force sensor can perform accurately.

it has to be flat with the red side facing up.
i have the velcro on my plastic sleeve that sticks to the flat part of my speedo.
i also safety wired a clip to the D-ring on the back of my plastic sleeve.
dont have pictures handy, but could take one tonight

oh you bought the display model? i know justin torres and brett babian bought them. they both crashed theirs and said they'd get teh 1000 model if they had to do it again. they both mounted theirs on their left side clip-on/top triple area.
the software integration is from Dash Ware. if you email them your Qstarz serial number, they'll send you a coupon so the software is only $30.
i dont know anything about the 6000 model, but i can at least show you the software on your laptop & how to integrate the data in Dash Ware.
