Might be a little late this season.

This year the R6 was due for a complete rebuild. So I tore it down.

Not a big deal I had plenty of time.

We did the same thing to the engine. Only have a photo because my camera decided to not work.

We got it 100% complete last week and took it off to Robs Dyno to get the motor broken in and mapped. He has built himself a fucking awesome dyno room and a shop that is soon to be complete.

    YouTube - R6 Dyno.wmv

115 at the wheel and 160 at the crank according to the dyno. It was running mint all day.

However at the end of the day it decided to drop a cylinder. We shut it down and brought it home to find this.

Cylinder 1 and 2 were functioning normally. 3 and 4 were tearing the case apart. The rings failed and scraped the lining off cylinder 3 and was working on 4.

As we stand now the case is off getting replated with a 10-12 day turn around time. Hopefully we will get it back in time and together once again.

Yes. Ring pistons. Pretty much brand new engine internals. I think maybe 3 transmission gears were reused.

damn that stinks. I would just be very curious as to why they failed. I've only rebuilt 1 car engine so I'm not expert but. Were they getting oil properly? and are motorcycle rings directional? I know the engine I rebuilt the rings had a certain direction that had to be up on the compression side.

don't doubt your knowledge just never seen an engine fail for no reason

We arent sure why yet. Best guess was due to detonation. It was getting plenty of oil and the rings were installed in the correct directions. On the ones that failed you can see that they did rotate for whatever reason.

Rings do rotate, but I think dan meant correct way up. There is a stamped letter on oem rings indicating the beveled edge and this goes up.

thats fricken weird. I'm out of ideas lol.

In my limited experience i've actually never seen rings fail in such a catastrophic manor. I would look closer at the rings and cylinder walls themselves. Maybe poorly coated or just a junk set of rings?

How loud was it? Cause detonation enough to cause that much damage would have been audible.

Also If you don't mind me asking did you make as changes to the compression ratio when you rebuilt it?

Dont mind me just thinking out loud

In simple terms the cylinder walls in 3 and 4 are fucked. The case is currently out being replated. Thats the hold up.

We did increase compression. We decked the head by .06 of an inch. We also went with a thinner head gasket. Everything measured within yamaha spec for a race motor. We are also using c12 for fuel. Most teams use a .45 mm gasket and we used a .40. The only thing I can think of was the deck could have been a little too low with the .40 even though the squish measured out above the minimum spec. Next rebuild will have the .50 gasket because the .45 has been on back order for 2 months now.

Do you have pics of all the piston tops? Are 3 & 4 the inside pair?

They are all similar on the top.

3 and 4 are the two on the riders right side.

It did. We had 68% leak down in one cylinder and 50% in another. It was tired.

There's still time. You just need to get Peter to stay up late and work on it while you go home.

Who says that isnt happening. We are in a holding pattern while we wait for the cases to come back. Hopefully no later then next week. Once they are in its full on build time. We can complete the bike in a day.
