Loudon makes my heart feel funny!

holy shit! this weekend was my firt time ever at loudon. I didn't race, just went to wach. I had never seen a race up close. I ride on the street but never been on a track. When we got there sat. and I got out of the car...can't even explain how I felt!!. I wana race so bad now!!.. no I need to race now!!.. I know i could be faster then alot of guys out there!!.. Talked to abunch of people... I don't have alot of money...do you Have to take the class to start Racing?

From what I have learned, yep you need to take a class to race.

Start with trackdays. Tony's trackdays are GREAT!

That's awesome... glad to hear you had a fun... Racing's definitely a good time and gives you an experience you can't get anywhere else.

Only downside is the cost... it's damn expensive no matter how ya do it and yes, you have to attend an accredited race school to get your license. Search around the Pit Area and you'll find a ton of info on racing costs and how to get started.

If you haven't ridden on a track before I highly suggest looking into trackdays. There's a VERY strong NESR representation at just about every Tony's Trackday date and it's a great way to get accustomed to riding at Loudon and hone your skills. Great people, great instructors, lots of tracktime. Check out the Trackday section on this forum & you'll see what I mean.

get something lightweight that actually turns. 600's are the bike of choice, but they cost two-three times the amount to run per race weekend than a bike like an EX500 for example.

My race bike was 1500 bucks... a cheap 600 is two to three times more. The other big thing you sink money into w/ a higher HP bike is tires. Some guys here regularly say they spend 300-500 bucks a race weekend just in tires. I've used the same tires the WHOLE SEASON on my ex500. It pays to play w/ the lightweights

I also like my EX cuz it crashes well... i've crashed hard twice the last couple race weekends & i've spent a grand total of 0 dollars getting it back up & running. Just bent stuff back into shape and got a few free parts from some great friends.

and yes, you can share a race bike... just switch numberplates between races... but if one of you crashes and break the bike, it kinda sucks.

These guys would be correct... a 600cc bike is going to cost you. Lay one down and your likely to receive more damage than that of an EX. Tires ... ehh... I push mine as long as I can because the money adds up quickly.... like mortgage payment quickly. I get at least 2 race weekends out of mine (for now). On the flip side... I love my bike. I... like you... had to make a decision. I sold my 04 600RR street bike and kept my 04 GSXR600 Race bike As someone else said... welcome to the madness.

Oh, wait... if your looking for an EX... I know someone who's got one in supposedly really good shape... ready to race... $800 I think. He's on here.... Orcutt ... where the hell are ya!

hmm..... I am gonna make my bike into a race bike this winter!! I already cleaned out my parrents garage tonight!... it'll be alot cheeper.. right?... Iam so excited...are u racing next weekend???....Iam brining all my buddies up there to check it out...I can't wait!

NESR = nestreetriders. There isn;t necessarilly a tent but an area where we all pit and hang out. as you com einto the infield all the NESR members are the first group of bikes you see when you go up the middle road in the infield. If you were there at night this weekend we were the ones with the projector at night watching movies on the side of a trailer. you may have heard some of our shenanigans on sat night too as we were fairly loud....

No, it won't be cheaper. It will be expensive and silly. You will end up ruining a perfectly good streetbike (when you crash, and everyone who races crashes) while stacking it up against newer and better motorcycles. Because it is a 750 you will only be able to race in limited classes, against modern 750cc+ motorcycles. And it will still eat up tires. In short, racing that bike might just be the worst idea ever (no offense intended).

Sell the bike, buy a used lightweight like and SV or an EX like everyone suggested (or a motard, if you're into that sort of thing), this will run you about 1000-3000. Then you'll need a riding suit, good boots, gloves, and a back protector if you don't have all that, on average people will spend 500-1000 initially. And a way to get your bike to the track. After those initial expenses, a lightweight bike will probably run you an average of 300-500 a weekend, depending on how many races you do and how much you crash. I think the bigger bikes are usually spending about twice that, 600-1000 a weekend.

Good luck, racing's fun just make sure you realize that it's a large commitment in terms of both time and money. There are ways to do it cheaper and easier, but it's still expensive and difficult. Race prepping your 92 ZX7 would be a way to make things much more expensive and difficult.

Racing has nothing to do with the size/speed of your bike. It's the same sport on a 125 as it is on a 1000. It's just cheaper and safer on a smaller bike. The level of competition is still high.

This past weekend in the wet weather only gave you a half a taste for the exhiliration of racing. It was like racing in slow motion because of the track condition.

I'm w/ Paul and Darrell (Honclfibr)... racing and prepping a '92 ZX7 to actually be competative is gonna put you in the poor house. You've gonna have to do a LOT of work to that thing to make it competative.

Going back to the subject of trackdays, if you haven't done trackdays already, keep the 750 in street trim, sign up for some trackdays and bring the ZX to see how it handles before you drop the money on converting it to a racebike. It'd also be a good idea if you found someone w/ a lightweight bike who wouldn't mind letting you borrow it for a session. I'd happily loan you my EX to try out so you can experience what it's like to ride a diferent bike. You'll see just how much easier it is to flip a smaller lighter bike through the tight Loudon sections than it is a big heavy zx7. You're really gonna have to work that thing to get your lap times down.
