Jay, you are right also. There are lots of things flexing and moving around, trying to find the balance is the key.
I'm no expert, but I think what happens is mare that the soft tire has enough grip to quickly wind up the flexible forks until the tires pointing the wrong way and has no choice but to "jump" off the pavement to unwind the forks and get it pointing in the right direction again. Once this starts you get an oscilation like a tiny tankslapper and the wheel chatters away.
Less grip through higher pressure and harder compounds doesn't wind up the forks as much and possibly slides a little instead of "jumping" to get straightened out.

It would be really cool to get a high speed video camera in turn nine, then we could actually see how dramatic it is.
Yea cause getting on the gas, same as applying rear brake, takes pressure off the front.
