Ha! I had a feeling this was gonna be a tough go. The world level 125s are as fast as a stock 600.

interesting read... still a damn shame they're killing 2strokes![]()

I still find that hard to believe. I mean I was ripping past Zambana 125's at Homestead on a clapped out Ducati SS with maybe 80hp.
Obviously laptimes don't lie but right now I'm kinda scratching my head.

didn't go through the whole article, but do we know if they are actually running the right engines now? i know the first couple tests they were just running "off the assembly line" stock cbr engines, not the spec motors.

You say this like I'm not aware of the numbers Paul.
As I suspected GP125's are way slower around a racetrack than a production based 600SS machine and the 600SS production-chassis machines are about the same speed as GP250's. Moto2's spec-motors should be offset by the prototype chassis which (in theory) should be far superior to the production 600 frames. I expect one they get the Moto2 bikes skunked out they will be very close to current 250 times... but that might take a year or so.
Also note the WSBK SS Championship is run on Pirelli DOT's as compared to the slicks run in GP.
Below are the 2009 numbers.
1'45.430 125 Q Assen
1'41.472 125 Q Valencia
1'37.770 125 Q Philip Island
2'08.171 125 Q Brno
1'40.019 250 Q Assen
1'36.116 250 Q Valencia
1'33.389 250 Q Philip Island
2'01.611 250 Q Brno
1'40.313 600SS Q Assen
1'35.865 600SS Q Valencia
1'34.833 600SS Q Philip Island
2'02.060 600SS Q Brno
I mean these are all BRAND NEW machines. I'm sure every team rider and enginerd is going 'ah okay wtf'. Going to take a few to figure out how these babies tick and how to make them go fast.
I spent almost a whole practice session battling with Santiago Villa when he was on a 125. He's not exactly a slouch. Granted we were both pretty far off the pace and in a practice but still, he's not some newb! http://team.roadracingworld.com/santiagovilla.html

Alex, can you clarify what those lap times are in comparison to 125 and 250 lap times? Wasn't sure which was which. And depending on the track, 125's with insane cornerspeed can get dangerously close to much more powerful bikes, but still.... you'd think a 120+HP Moto2 bike should be able to overcome that handicap! They sure aren't heavy bikes....
