Full version.
First off my condolences to Scott's family and friends. I didn't know him personally but from what I have heard/read we lost a great member of the racing and LRRS community. Nobody will ever be able to explain the passion and love racers have for their sport, but because of that love I can take comfort in knowing Scott was in good company on that track. I really am at a loss for words. All I can really say is godspeed to his family and friends, RIP Scott.
Race report.
Drove up early Saturday, wait in the pre-reg line only to find out my sheet didn't make it in time. I then proceed to wait in the post reg line. Finally made it to the pits, unloaded and went for first practice.
GTL: Thanks to my screw up with the pre-reg I'm starting inside, last row. Decent launch but by T1 I have to check up a bit as I have a stack of bikes coming from the outside. Get a little frustrated, but know its a long race. Have no idea how far back I am coming out of 2. Put my head down and worked my ass off from there. On lap 4 I clicked off a 22.7, not too bad on my little SV and my new personal best. Just kept fighting from there. By the half way point, I had passed anyone I could catch. There were a few bikes way off in the distance but I was getting tired. Nobody behind me so I ran as hard as I could without overstepping my boundaries, clicked off another couple 22's. Fatigue was really starting to set in and I expected to see my times drop lap after lap near the end, stayed in the 23-24 range. No idea where I was going to finish that one. Turns out I took a fourth. Yay, wood for me.
After I catch my breath, I notice a strange wear pattern on the left side of my tire. Theres a small divot at the end of each tread line. Bike didn't really move too much during the race and I had just put that tire on last weekend so to think it was shagged was the farthest thing from my mind. Head over to PK. He looks at it, tells me it smoked. Really? Yeah he says, how old is it? well I put it on last weekend, couple light sessions on friday, two practices sat morning, a GT and a sprint race, plus two practices today and a GT. He looks at it again and goes..."low 20's?" yeah. well this is what happens when you get faster. great. he also bounces on the bike etc, tells me to back off a turn on preload. no time for a new tire, have to get out for race six.
LWSS: Figure I will head out, tiptoe through the left hand corners and just get another finish under my belt. Starting this race from dead last thanks to my pre-reg screw up. Horrible start, not sure where I ended up. Picked off a few people and got behind Jersey and Wayne a lap or so in. Still being a bit timid on the left but didnt get too much movement out of the bike except exiting 12 and 2. Knew I could get a better pace going if I could get past Chris and Wayne. Only place I knew I was a lot quicker was 7-9 but I wasn't going to be quick enough to get both of them safely. Came around on the fourth lap and got a really good drive out of 2. At that point it was all good, took both of them on the brakes coming into 3. At that point, pussy footing around the track was out the window. No idea where we stood position-wise but I knew there was no way I was going to move back any positions. Created a little gap when they had some issues coming into 1 and that was that. Last couple laps I would take a quick look behind me and didn't see any yellow plates so I just tried to stay consistient. Wrapped it up in 3rd place. More wood.
Long story short, new best lap time and more plaques to take home.
Thanks to everyone in DNF, best pit in town. Been a rough start to the season and the way you guys can keep morale up is incredible. Thanks to everyone.
Timmy, it gets joked about a lot that you are a pit-bitch etc and.... well you are. But seriously, your a huge help up there and it wouldn't be DNF without you. Well done kid.
Biggest thanks to my finacee' Julie. She's my good luck charm and her willingness to support me and be there for me when she can plainly see the tough start to the season others have had means more to me than she will ever know. Thanks hun, I love you.
