So long story short, my girlfriend is getting a 1970 Honda CB350 from her brother as her first bike tomorrow. The bike is in really good shape except for the fact it won't shift out of first. I haven't tried to do anything to it yet so I'm just going by what her brother is telling me. He's saying that it won't shift unless you grab the shifter with your hand and give it a really good jerk. He seems to think that the linkage may have gotten bent when a friend of his was helping him take it out of the back of a truck or some pin may have fell out. I'm not sure if this is a common problem with these bikes or not, just looking for a "where to start" from people who may have had a similar problem with an older CB.

Clutch gummy see if you can motorflush and new oil
get her warm and adjust the clutch and make sure it move freely.
yes shaft could be junk but my way is nearly free

Lube those linkages as well, if those gummed up they'll make it a PITA to shift as well.
ya check the clutch before the shaft. if the clutch isnt disengaging when the levers pulled it can be a bitch to shift
I had one that The shifter would move on the Spline and hit the frame. not letting the shifter engage in 2nd

Ancient history the splines on mine went...soft steel
if linkage moves relative to shaft put in a dutchman
If splines are completely shot test shifting with visegrip
put it together in CORRRECT position for shifting
drill and tap a hole in the gap between shaft and linkage so its 1/2 way in each
depending on size either 10 or 1/4 inch screws
put in a real screw like a socket head cap screw. <<< dutchman then be nice

The bike is toast - you should just give it to me. - But seriously... when she is done with it I may be interested. file that away for later.
I looked at it closer today and it seems that the shifter is either bent or wasn't put in correctly. I'm going to go through the manual to see the way it is supposed to be mounted and if it isn't wrong I'm going to order up a new one. Anyway this is the bike I'm dealing with

Sweet bike. Let me know if your sis doesn't take to it I may want to buy it from you/ sis/ bro[?] It looks to be in pretty decent shape.
Kev
Girlfriend, she got it from her brother for free. He bought it 2 years ago and stripped it down to the frame, rebuilt the top end, sandblasted everything and powder coated it. There is no paint on the bike, he powder coated everything on the bike except the motor and trans. If she doesn't want to keep it I'll let you know but chances are it will be dropped a few times by then.

Blake - leave it just the way it is and I'll buy it.
So I figured out the shifting problem, he put part of the linkage in upside down
I threw a new battery in it and found out it won't start. Pulled a wire and there is no spark. I pulled the cover off to check the points and when I hit the starter nothing moves. It spins with the kick start but still no spark. When I pulled the tank I found one green wire that isn't plugged in to anything and I can't find the other end of it. Time to start reading the wiring diagram
Chris, I'd love to do a Cafe racer with it. I'm going to see how she takes to the bike and let her decide what she wants to do with it. I might just price out some parts to convert it just in case![]()

I'm going out of town for a week on Monday so I'm not going to be able to look at it 'till I get back. 90% of the wiring connects under the tank. The wire might even go to the directionals because those aren't working right now either. I have the diagram so it's just a matter of reading it, I hate wiring. I also need to finish pulling off the side cover to check out why the starter isn't spinning the motor over, the starter does spin itself.

I think point gap is supposed to be about .016
Clean point contacts with business card or any rough stiff paper
Pinch points over card and stroke gently but firmly
