Hey guys got an issue with my 2002 ex500, it will not turn over when pushing the ignition. I just hear a single click every time I push the ignition. The battery I have right now is a few months old (got it at the beginning I the season). This issue started last night when I was trying to leave my university parking lot, so I decided to take the battery with me and get it tested in the morning. Got it tested at advance auto parts and the result on the battery were good, went back to school to test it and still nothing, just a click when I try and start it :/. I am just going to tow it back to my place, any suggestions on whatever be the issues? Thanks in advance for the help guys
Is the kickstand switch broken?
make sure all the connections are clean an tight
Does it run if you push start it? If you're on a hill give it a roll and pop the clutch. Make sure the choke's on and I like to crack the throttle as I let the clutch out. Just be ready for it to take off. Don't forget that if this doesn't work, now you have to park it whereever you rolled it.
Possible it has a safety switch problem? I'm assuming you're trying to start it in neutral. What about in gear with the clutch pulled in?

I'll take it off your hands
Starter solenoid. Jump it with a screwdriver. If the bike starts, replace the solenoid. Yes, it will throw a few sparks. It's ok.

put a meter across the battery and try to start it... if the voltage drops when you push the start button its the battery

update: i had a friend that was a mechanic for 5 year look at it real quick before i had it towed. he was able to get it to turn on by putting it into first and just walking the bike a little bit forward and hitting the ignition switch. so the bike it back home Grin now what do you guys think the problem is? i even took a short video of the issue

Bad starter. It has a bad spot on the commutator
you could just get a new communicator too..

Bad starter or hung up brushes in the starter.

Still jump the BIG wires on the starter solenoid and see if she cranks
On my Vstrom the big wires are next to each other and a pliers jumps them fine
Of course wiggle ALL the fat wires red and black to try to find anything loose and tighten it.

So I just took my bike out and brought it to the mechanics at biker’s outfitters in revere. They confirmed the starter is bad and are quoting me $300+ to get a OEM starter plus labor, so it will probably cost me $600+ to get this fixed :/ should I take it to a different shop or is this a fair price?
If anyone here on the forums want to take the bike off my hands for a cool $1000 pm me. I was thinking of buying a newer bike anyway, this can be a easy fix for anyone that know what they are doing.
Dude buy a starter online and throw someone here $50 to put it on for you
+1 on that, that's a wicked easy starter to change, don't take a beating on it. I just sold one for that bike on Ebay last week for $29.99 shipped.

Changing the starter on that thing is like wiping your ass. Super easy unless you're a toddler... or drunk.
Find an Ebay special and grab the wrenches. Don't forget to use TP.

thanks for the advice guys, i went back to the shop today and took the bike back (they only charged me 40 bucks to "diagnose the problem"). I told them i wasn't interested in spending $600 plus dollars to fix a simple starter issue. I m going to pick up a starter online and see if i can find a good tutorial on how to replace it on my bike. anyone willing to install the starter for me (does $100 sound fair)?
If you were closer I'd do it. I have no plans to go to Kanes donuts either. Look at a tutorial online, it's really not that difficult.

Ride it to Groveland and I'll do it for a good roast beef sandwich.
But then I'll have to kill you, cuz there can only be one Pete on NESR

I'd double check their work, may just be the starter relay or the starter brushes. Ensure the bike is in neutral and put a screwdriver across the two big terminals on the starter relay. If the engine turns over, the starter is good. If it does not turn over, the battery may be dead, the battery cables or starter cables may be loose or the brushes might be worn on the starter. Brushes (or a complete rebuild kit for 20 bucks) are MUCH cheaper than a new starter.
thanks for the offer guys, i got a starter coming this week, imma take a swing at installing it myself. but if i fail ill let you know lol.
I did try sparking the starter relay with a screwdriver didn't work and i replaced the relay also, still gave me a "click". battery was also tested, i also checked all the connections and cables. hopefully replacing the starter will get her running again, the weather is getting nice.
