Hello,
So my 2018 bike has an oil leak around the stator cover and my bike is out of warranty. I have done work on cars before so I figured I would give it a go.
After digging a little I realized maybe I should have taken my bike to a shop...lol... We may very well end up there in the end.
So after I removed the stator cover, I am trying to take the old paper gasket off which is breaking into very small pieces. Any help on what can I do to help that along?
What do you do for surface prep work after the gasket is removed to remove any oil residue and clean surface?
The other part is where the stator wires exits the cover, I need to remove the square rubber block and add some liquid gasket to help seal that area as it does not have a seal besides a friction fit gasket. I have some yamabond 4 I was thinking of using instead of RTV. Thoughts?
It was all simple in my head, get in and get out... I wanted to ride this weekend as its showing 60ish and sunny. I guess that wont be happening![]()
That post is pretty on-point. Plastic razorblades are awesome.
For stubborn residue I use a light duty scotchbrite (grey or white); make sure you clean the abrasive dust out thoroughly or mask the motor if you're cleaning up the cases. For RTV i use the Permatex red high-temp stuff (81160) for everything, but the one PP linked is good too. You can use it in lieu of paper gaskets.
Thanks, I was able to remove the old gasket that was glued on to the case side.
I have an OEM paper gasket as that is the only way to go in my experience.
I did use some gasket remover fluid that helped loosen the gasket from the case.
gaskets are weird. they can last a decade or a weekend. you can always trace and cut a cereal box cover in a gasket emergency, and if your arts and craft skills are good it can be just as good as oem!

So I had finished the work on my bike. It had gone mostly well, removing the old gasket was the biggest PITA! using some gasket remover and a very sharp blade, it was all removed. Cleaned with brake cleaner and liquid gasket around the rubber gromet.
Rode ~100 miles since then and no drips to report.
