Christian, install the cam caps with no cams and feel the mating surfaces for any lip. You can feel 2thou with your fingers. The aluminum will hone easily if needed. Use 400grit paper to hone with something like a socket or piece of round stock steel. Hone in direction of cam movement. Do the cam install and rotate by hand for feel and then check the mating surfaces for any wear and re-hone. Again, itnisnt rocket science. If the cams rotate smoothly with no binding at all and aren't loose you should be fine.

He has a spare can cap. He is trying to avoid buying the disposable head for $250 or whatever it is they go for.Originally Posted by Marc

When I say cap I mean tower.

Looking at the parts fiche, I see ball bearing assemblies between the cam and the tower setup. The whole tower comes out...
Just replace that tower with your spare and run it as long as you don't have excessive slop.

Those honda heads are disposable cheap.
Apparently not this one..................
For what it's worth If it were mine I would try what Degsy and Kurlon are saying. Swap in the spare and make sure nothing is completely out of the ordinary with the cam and give it a go.

Is the item in question item number 2 on the following micro fiche? I know it may not be the correct year (I took a guess that all the CRF450R heads were similar).
http://www.ronayers.com/Fiche/TypeID.../CYLINDER_HEAD
Part number 12240-MEB-770
If so, then I would definitely try the spare. They sell them individually not as part of the complete Head so they must be interchangeable between heads and the dowel pins on the bottom line them up to the head. Please let me know if that doesn't make any sense.

Yes that is the part. And that makes sense. I will order the dowel pins and put the spare on. The cam bearings are new as of the second race weekend so those should still be fine. Thanks!
And yes Gino, I am thinking that this is why my bike was running like crap and would not start on Sunday, as my valves are in spec.

If your valves are in spec with that crack in the cam tower, your valves aren't gonna be anywhere near in spec with the new cam tower.
All it would do with that crack is reduce your lift/duration slightly... I don't think that's why the bike wasn't starting. If anything it'd start easier with more compression...

I meant when he puts the new tower on.
Ok everything is swapped over to the new tower, just have to go get assembly grease, seem to be out.

Ok just an update I got the bike running. The problem actually wasn't the cam tower. Corrosion and other junk actually made it's way into the hot start in the carb and made it stick open. Cleaned it out and put it back together, and voila! It runs!
Oh yeah. And I brought the bike to my "mechanics" house and he was revving it on the stand to diagnose it when I saw the swingarm bolt backing out. The bolt SHEARED! Like the end with the nut broke right off. The only reason it did not come out while i was racing was because the end hit the rear brake pedal.![]()
