Chain Cleaning

Has anyone used WD40 to clean their chain? Is that o-ring safe?

WD40 is an excellent chain cleaner. I have also used it to clean the wheels and swingarm of chain lube, too.

It is a product that can do most anything.

Just make sure to get it off the chain before you get going again. WD-40 is definately not "anti-fling!!" I use WD or Kero, they both work great for cleaning, then chain wax to make sure it's lubed.

I'm DEF no expert but I have been using wd40 in a cup (I buy the big jugs ) cause I was told that the aerosol stuff can destroy the o-rings. I always figured I woul dbe better sae than sorry so I pour the 40 into a cup and use a toothbrush to get in there and clean off the chain. Then I wipe it off with a rag and then spray on the lube and let it sit overnight. Worked so far for me....

I use Dubbya-D all the time to clean chains, swingarms, even left over adhesive from sticker removal. As mentioned, be sure to get it all off your chain when you're done...

Cool, my chain is looking a bit funky...I plan to give it the kerosene treatment over the winter...

erf. if you want it to last do it when needed (which is prolly before winter!). anytime you get in the rain or gets dirty after riding alot you should clean it. to further explain what others said about WD-40...it is a cleaner, NOT a lubricant. if you only use that stuff you'llleave your chain unlubbed (bad bad bad) when your done. use it to clean dirt / grease off and then relub with chain wax or some similar product.

"your honor. nowhere on this product does it say to not clean the pivot point of a motorcycle kickstand. My client cleaned the pivot point of his kickstand and because of the lubrication, the bike fell over because the kickstand pivoted freely. Oh, and dont forget to include the paving contractor in your suit for "shoddy work in laying the asphalt in such a way as to not prevent said kickstand from moving". I'd also include the manufacturer of the asphalt itself for "not being of industry-standard formulation as to provide adequate adhesion properties to prevent tip-overs".

You guys got any suggestions for a good chain wax or lube?? I just cleaned mine with WD-40 and it looks good but i want to lube it before i drive to storage for the winter.

I use WD as a chain cleaner and as a lube The last bike i had long ennough to replace the stock chain was a 1998 R1, i replaced the chain after 31K miles.

Now the dirty toys, that's another story!! I clean the chain with WD and lube it up with 10/40 motor oil and a paint brush. I've found the motor oil keeps the chain in much better shape and the "fling" cleans off extremely easy unlike the spray on chain lubes/wax.

Bel Ray. Never had an issue with fling and the chain loves the stuff.

I clean with WD40 and a rag, then use Silkolene. I'd like to try the chain wax myself. This lube works great but I did too much 1st time out and got a lot of fling fling
