    Engine races, won't idle down

    Hi guys,
This is my first bike so keep that in mind.
    92 GSXR 750 (engine), 88 body
-I cleaned the carbs because the bike would not idle and the bike had sat for a couple years. I cleaned the jets and got everything back together.
-Now when i start it the engine races, as if i'm full on the throttle.
-The throttle cable looks correct, the same as it was before.
    I'd appreciate any help.
    Thanks,
    Eric

    Engine races, won't idle down

most the time there is a knob that adjusts idle speed, find that and mess with it

Idle speed, carb's out of sync, or a possible vacuum leak. My first guess would be the carbs are wildly out of sync.

They should call Production Twins what it really is, Shitty McBikefest. Rules for Participation: If your bike runs lower laptimes than a lawnmower, you are not eligibile for Shitty McBikefest. -Darrell

    Engine races, won't idle down

-When i cleaned the carbs I only took of the float chamber to get to the jets and the diaphram to check the other side. I didn't take the entire thing apart. I also didn't change or adjust anything it i didn't know what it was. I only cleaned the valves, and replaced 1 of the diaphram springs.
-I bike ran fine before, it just wouldn't idle without the choke all the way out (at about 3000 rpm)
-Could i have meesed up the idle speed and the sync of the carbs even though i didn't really take too much apart, or touch anything i didn't know about? Would changing only 1 of the springs put the carbs out of sync?
    I'll defiantely check though. Thanks

It's unclear, based on your posts, but if you removed the carbs for the cleaning then there's a chance of a vacuum leak around one of the intake boots...are all the boots tight?

(I check for vacuum leaks by spraying a small amount of WD-40 around the boots...if it idles up then the answer is 'vacuum leak'.)

Get the thing to idle somewhat and sync the carbs. It doesn't take much to knock 'em out of balance especially if they've been taken apart.

If it's been jetted then chances are the slider springs have been cut...it's not an uncommon mod when jetting....you may see an issue if you have 3 cut springs and one factory-length spring...the sliders themselves will be out of sync due to differences in spring pressure....that is, of course, assuming the springs have been cut.

Are you totally certain the jets you removed ended up back in their respective places?

    Engine races, won't idle down

I'm not sure if I was clear but it does not idle at all. The throttle is wide open. I shut it down after a couple seconds beacuse the rpm's don't level out, and i don't want to destory the motor.

-When you say "intake boot" i assume you are referring to the connection from the air filter box to the carbs.
-The slide(that lets the air in) that has the new spring definately has more resistance than the others. I'll check to see if the other ones were cut.
-I am positive that the jets are back in their repsective carbs. I was told it was very important to keep everything seperate and clean, so that's what i did.
-I pulled the carbs out again to make sure that nothing was stuck, and everything looks ok.

    Engine races, won't idle down

    I'm a bit confused...

So "doesn't idle" "throttle wide open" and "rpm's don't level" means it's bouncing off the rev limiter?

Does the engine idle at any RPM's? Where's the "3000 RPM's" you mentioned come into play? Is that where it idles at right now, 3000 RPM's?

Intake boot = if it's made of rubber and part of the intake then it's an intake boot

-It is bouncing of the rev limiter
-It does not idle at any RPM, it idled at 3000 RMP before i cleaned the carbs.
-yeah i figured out the intake boot, thanks.

Sorry I don't understand all the technical terms and everything but i've never worked on a bike before.

    I'll go with that...

Since the carbs were out, what are the chances the throttle cables are binding now?

Check the movement of the cables to see if there is anything out of the norm.

Before the carbs were out, the bike "idled" at 3k....carb work was done and now the bike tachs out?

While you're in there, back the idle speed screw out 3 turns.

-The throttle cables are not binding

-The cable moves fine. However it is tight about 3/4 cm before it hits the throttle stop screw. I assume that's my problem. The throttle adjuster at the handle bars is broken, so i guess i'm replacing that and the cable.

-That's correct. Before the carb work it would idle at 3k, with the choke out all the way. Without using the choke it would stall.

Any chance you wanna truck that beast to my place for a little TLC?

I have everything you could imagine to fix a bike.

This is not a dig, but you mentioned you've never worked on a bike so there might be things you are doing incorrectly and not even realizing it...hence the situation at hand.

    Engine races, won't idle down

Thanks for the offer. For now i'm going to try and do it myself. I'd like to figure out how it all works before riding it. If things get out of hand i will definately seek professional help though.

I have some friends who have bikes and will stop by to point out the obvious things that i'm missing.

Tomorrow i'll go over the schematics of everything again.

    Do you have a shop?
