My fjr is starting to do what my old honda shadow did the steering bearings loosen up and the front end tends to squerril around when at low speed. It is an annoyance and could become a real problem if it gets much worse. I am told by a dealer to change out the steering head bearings but wouldn't a steering damper kit do the trick? Anybody have experience with this problem?

similar stuff happened to me on my vmax..
1. change ur bearings, it should be cheap. under $80 for the pair.
2. steering damper works good, if there are sitll problems, however i wouldn't use one instead of replacing bearings.
if you take ur forks off, do you feel notchy ness when u turn the trips?
The bike is 6 years old its time to change the bearings. Using a damper to mask a Problem is just crazy talk (A damper is gonna cost more then the bearings) With a damper you are going to have the same problem (only Slower)

ok thanks for the advise. The dealer says change them and you guys agree. I don't do my own big work so have not taken it apart but would be suprised if it was that bad that it was buggered up. Now should I worry about doing it immediatly as I ride every day and would wait a bit till fall?

Adjusting (tightening) the bearings is a quick job and should see you through to fall when you can replace them.
kudos guys and thanks again for the immediate response to my tech question.![]()
