Heres the scoop. My front brake lever sometimes feels abnormaly soft. today I squeezed the lever to see if it felt "spongy" and I was able to pull the lever all the way to the grip??? I then pumped the lever maybe 2 more times and it was back to normal again, leaving around a 1 1/2 inch gap between the grip and the lever...Like a car break pedal feels when you put new pads on and you pump the pedal the first time, it goes to the floor and then it goes back to normal..??? Does this mean I have air stuck in the lines??? ANy help would be greatly appreciated thanks.![]()
Hmmmm. If there was air in the system I think it should be spongy everytime you pull in the lever.
If you got the time, I'd go ahead and bleed the system and put in fresh brake fluid, wouldn't hurt.
Sounds to be like you have a warped rotor or bent rotor carrier.
derek
I bled the brakes today and they seem alot more sensitive again. I think a good bleed did the trick. Night and Day. Degs, I read your postings about brake issues and thought about the carrier and the rotors, but I really haven't ridden this bike hard enough or long enough to have issues with the carrier/ rotor. The bike has got less than 5 thousands miles on it. COuld I be mistaken?? feel free to shed some wisdom on the topic.
BTW . is it really bad to get some brake fluid spill on the tire wall?? I went inside to grab a torque wrench and a flood light after I buttoned up the resovoir because it was getting dark out, The bleed hose popped off the last time I did and open/close and splattered brake fluid on parts of the tire, the rim, the brakes, and the the rotor. I wiped it off as best I could and then drenched the area with water.
The reason why Degs thinks it's a rotor or carrier is cuz when that happens, the rotor will push the caliper pistons into the caliper... that means more fluid is required to push the piston and pad up against the rotor.
Is the bike in Boston yet or still in NY?

Rotors do not get bent from riding, more of a fall-over or trailering issue.
don't worry about the tires.

Yep, you would need to have had a knock on the rotor carrier to bend that.
The rotor can warp from heavy heavy braking repeatedly (track use).
Usually, if you have air in the fluid, the pull is spongy. It doesn't go spongy to hard and then spongy again.

if the rotor is warped, wouldn't you feel a pulsing in the brakes as you are rolling?

Depends how warped.Originally posted by RandyO

one of my front wheels has warped rotor, and it pulses like heck, and I have a good firm squeeze on the brake, it's never mushy, the warpage is so little you can't see it without a dial indicatorOriginally posted by Degsy

you MUST get a new tire immediately!!!Originally posted by FireFly

the brake fluid dematerializes the molecular compound of the rubber --- + adding water to it only spreads + speeds up the decomposition (like trying to put out a chemical fire with water) of the rubber! Unfortunitely this tire is already beyond saving + any type of rapid movement(such as riding) will cause the bead to dematerialize instantly causing a catostrophic event including the tire to spontaniously combust do to the heat from the rim being introduced into the posionus chemical gasses already being produced + released into the ozone!
for the sake of everything good in this world, DO NOT RIDE ON THIS TIRE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What kind of tire is it? If it's a dunlop 208 then call me immediately and I will dispose of it for you properly!! If the brake fluid causes abnormal decomposition and it prematurely melts you'll have an environmental issue on your hands.......and you don't want that.

OMG, you had brake fluid touch the tire!!!!! Both tires need to be replaced immediately, as well as the rims, forks, swingarm, chain and sprockets, frame, engine, etc. - the contamination needs to be contained!!! To be safe you might just want to find someone nice enough to take the bike off your hands and hide it from the EPA (ALA trackbike - they'd never look for it there) and buy a new bike... Good thing you notified us - the fines and penalties could have been huge...
