So my oil filter is stuck, it must have been put on way too tightly and no oil on the seal...
It's a round type (K&N I believe) with a 17mm nut on the end- the nut is stripped.
I bought a filter clamp tool- it just dented the filter and it didn't budge. Trying to bend the handle on the tool so I can fit a closed wrench over it for more leverage. Don't have clearance for a pipe (the handle is pointing downwards since that's the only way the tool fits).
I also got a BFH and hammered a screwdriver through it, but broke the screwdriver in the process of trying to twist it off. But, my tools are pretty cheap (task force)- so I pretty much expected the screw driver to break.
If anyone has any suggestions please post. I'm thinking I need a thicker/better screwdriver, anyone have one that they would be willing to volunteer?
Thanks.

It was already slightly stripped.... Meaning I think it was tightened to the point of stripping that nut.
I have done the screwdriver trick, and snapped one in the process. Anyone have like a titanium screwdriver?

Push directly on the end and turn at the same time.
First time I'm changing the oil on this one- I usually do it hand tight and clamp+safety wire or just safety wire for the K&N types. I'll keep workin at it.
Bergs- I tried that, I read your post in the older oil filter thread... I'll try it again, don't want to knock the bike off the stands.

Trust me. Push directly on the end and turn at the same time.

Assuming the friction of the rubber seal between the filter and the housing is creating the resistance, wouldn't adding more pressure to the seal increase the friction even more?
I have tried it- but just trying to figure out how it works.

If you can put the rear tire up against a wall or some other solid object, that will allow you to really crank on it.
I mean push directly on the end of the filter. Yes, the friction on the o-ring will increase but the real issue is the amount of pressure against the threads as a result of the o-ring trying to expand. If you push in on the filter you will be releasing some of the pressure on the threads. The trick is turning the filter at the same time.
My "turning" is being limited by the screwdriver which broke. Because of the limited space and stuff around the filter, the only direction I can really crank is downwards- so it isn't pulling the bike back.
The nut is completely stripped. I hammered a smaller socket on it but couldn't get it all the way over the nut- and then cranked on that until it stripped again.
Maybe my sockets aren't ideal- they're the ones with many little "teeth".

Does anyone have a good oil filter clamp tool that works with smaller oil filters?
I got the smallest one I could find at advance auto parts, and it has to tighten all the way to get a grip on the filter. I only have so much room to add rubber stuff as a damper...
If I could keep the handle on the filter clamp straighter, it would do more twisting and less denting/pushing...

I've never liked the screw driver trick..not only is it messy, but half the time it doesn't work.
A trick that has always worked for me with tight filters, I loosen the filter first while the bike is cold, then snug it back up before I warm up the bike for the oil change. The hotter the engine, the more parts expand, the tighter the filter will get
You're best bet at this point is to try and make a notch or goove (dremel tool) in the filter ring as close to the engine as possible. make it deep enough that a screw driver tip will catch it, then tap the screw driver with a hammer in the loosening direction

Gotta find someone with oil filter pliers rather than the band-type wrench.

I went through this with the vfr this year. I ended up going to autozone and getting a oil filter wrench, that was basically a chain that wrapped around the filter, you just adjust the chain to the size of your filter. I had to take off a smog canister to get it, but it worked. Good luck.
Yea my kickstand is the only thing I could move that is making it hard to move around more with the band-style clamp (which sucks anyway). I tried to remove my whole kickstand assembly, and ended up breaking an allen in the process.
At this point I'm going to look for a better oil filter clamping tool. I don't think the pliers will do it because I'm going to need to create more leverage somehow- and I can't do that if I'm grabbing on the pliers...
The bike has been cold since I started. I also let the oil flow out while it was cold- maybe should have warmed it up, I know there's different opinions on that.

I have one of these I can bring over along with some other tools and such I you want. I'm free tomorrow.

those R6s have the oil filter in the worst friggen spot.
you need a better screwdriver. Go get a big craftsman. should be better than what you have and if you break it you can just get a new one for free.

If its still stuck, try a strap wrench. Thats how I take mine off. For 10$ they're a great investment.
+1 on the strap wrench. i have a rubber type craftsman one that works great.
