So I was lubing my chain this and I noticed that the change was a little loose and the wear indicator is saying I am at the end of life for the chain.
The bike has 5,400 miles on it and I noticed that people are getting at leat 10 - 15k out of their chains?? Am I wrong???
I am 99% positive that the kid I bought the bike from put a 15t sprocket on the front and I am wondering is my chain too long from installing the smaller sprocket??? Is it really worn out and I need a new one or does the chain need a link taken out of it?
I read something on another thread on here about how you measure the distance between 21 links to see if your chain is too stretched but it wasn't very clear how to do it or how to determine at what measurement that the chain is too worn.
grab the chain between links on your rear sprocket and pull. if there is play, the chain is bad. additionally make sure all the links move freely, meaning they are not tight or kinked anywhere.
not sure if that makes sense or not.

never mind, heres a link that explains it better.

If it wasn't serviced or taken care of the life is cut dramatically. I have gotten 28K out of a OEM chain but a well serviced and taken care of chain. I would just replace the set and chain......
and going -1 isn't going to create much slack if any, my 1k is +3 on a stock chain and its as far close as poss...

If it's a stock chain, your shop manual will give you the measurement specks for chain stretch. I use a set of calipers to check.
If it's after market or a conversion from say a 530 to 520 with a gearing change, you can get specs from the manufacturer ( RDK, DID, etc. ).
However, if you have no idea or the know how, buy a new chain and sprocket set and start from scratch.
Then there's X ring, O ring......
I'm not a fan of removing links unless your the person who originally installed the set and are sure of the maintenance and stretch spec.
Chain failure can = very, very bad things.
Oh, and as BMFR6 said, there are some other indicators for sprocket and chain wear. As you gain experience, these checks become 2nd nature.

Thank you for the quick replies guys, Is there any truth to what my friend said when i asked him this??...
My friend told me not to pay attention to the chain wear guide because that doesn't nesseceraly mean the chain is gone. He said to pay more attention to the sprocket teeth and if there is significant wear on them then change the whole set?
It is a stock chain.. I think the kid I bought it from put the 15t sprocket on right when he bough the bike so he didn't replace the chain the rear sprocket becasue they where new.
I am almost positive the sprockets look good from what i saw this morning when lubing (At least the rear does and that's stock, going to take the front cover off when i get home to check out the front one)
If the sprockets look good should i just tighten the chain and call it a day or should i really replace?? Or can the sprockets look great and the chain still be junk?
Just don't want to spend $200 if it fine. BUT I TOTALLY AGREE, CHAIN IS REALLY IMPORTANT AND I DON"T WANT IT TO BREAK ON ME!

No, great machine. I am just a Suzuki guy at heart but have a love for Hundo's. Dirt Cr and crf's are the only way to go and though id rather a GSXR its still a nice bike. I can't say there is anything is like my 1k but the Honda is a great 600 with a well built feel...

Wirelessly posted (Opera/9.60 (J2ME/MIDP; Opera Mini/4.2.13057/488; U; en) Presto/2.2.0)
1. Hondas kick ass (I own a VTR1000 and love it)
2. Why fuck around wondering if the chain is any good. Like someone said before, you didn't install it so do not screw with shortening it. As for the wear indicator, it is there for a reason. Just go to any number of sites, type in your bike and sprocket setup and they will send you a chain that is the correct length. Me personally, I would redo the sprokets. It is allways best to have them done at the same time because you are most likely going to need a new chain after you replace them in a couple thousand miles. Just save yourself the aggrivation
Thank's Y'all, I'm going to take your advice and go with the new sprocket and chain set. You 're right... whats 200 bucks when you dealing with a situation where if things when wrong i'd be pretty FUBAR.
If I go back to a stock 16t size instead of another 15t in front will I notice much of a difference?
I would go -1 in the front and either +1 in the back or stock...+1 in the rear will give it a little more kick....thats what I would do....my 2Cents

I believe the 525 chain on their now is stock... do you recommend going with the 520 over the 525 (which 525 is basically just a little more beafy right?)
what's the advantage if any to either?
Either or you will not see a Diff......
here is a good link to figure out the oem spec....

Rides an R1 and makes fun of someone because of their bike choice = well, he is your friend so Ill avoid being a bastard for once, but it would involve making up for inadequacies and such
I love hondas, I shall defend to the death!
As for the chain, stick with stock. There is no reason for a 520 on a street bike unless you like replacing more often.
Supa Motarded! If you see me backin it in, keep watching...Im about to crash
Zip Tie Alley #237
great, another chain thread. can we talk about gas and oil too?
dude, count the teeth on your front sprocket...that'll give you an answer about going into a 20+ thread about chains.
and no, dont get a 520 for a street bike. if you want to know why, hit the search button on here.
