I'm just going to modify it so I can see what's going on in there. No need to leave it off or totally botch it. It's easy enough to take off anyway if I actually have to change something.

Hopefully this will do it... Lots of loctite, 150 ft-lbs, and 4 bent tabs. Not safety-wiring for now. Planning to go safety wire crazy this winter.

Nice chain! Were there still enough splines to engage the locking washer to the shaft?

The splines are fine. It was just a couple threads for the nut that had worn down. But it still engaged just fine.
Made a sight window too.
