Nighthawk or Goldwing for new rider 40+

I am looking at getting my dad a starter bike but I want to make sure he won't outgrow it in a few months or need work every couple weeks. I was thinking a nighthawk 6/750 or a 80's Goldwing. Anyone have any advice? I'm looking to keep it <1000$. What kind of mileage is reaching end of life on either of these bikes?

I would say that a Goldwing is not a beginner's bike. They're too big, heavy, and awkward to move.

my first bike was an 82 Nighthawk 750 that I still miss.

Helluva gift! Gonna include the safety course with that?

As far as "outgrowing" goes, generally, older bikes depreciate VERY little. You could buy him a smaller bike that's a better learning tool & sell it for what you paid a year or two later.

Not trying to talk you out of getting him whatever bike you want to get him, just saying whole "outgrowing" thing isn't as logical as one would think.

I'll keep my eyes open for ya though.

Well a nighthawk seems kind of small for a guy in his 40's imo.. but i ride a warrior 1700... i know he wants a standard or touring more than a cruiser or sport.

+1 definitely including the safety/rider course

Coo, coo. What location will he be taking it? Do you know yet? Lotta MSF instructors on here, myself included.

FWIW, I've watched guys in their 40's drop Nighthawk 250's so don't tell them it's too small
Just cuz you're older & biger doesn't mean you're automatically gonna be a skilled rider right off the bat.

We have a Yamaha XJ650 for sale for 1200 that seems it would fit the bill. Has plenty of power and an upright riding position.

I think that's a very valid opinion, but FWIW, my cousin just started out on a mint 80s Wing about two months ago... Rides it every day w/o incident so far.
