Does anyone know if using 10W40 during the summer months in NewEngland really makes that much of a difference compared to running maybe like a 15W50 oil?? I know oil gets thinner when its hotter out but I've been told you don't need a thicker oil unless you live in a place like Texas or Arizona. I'm paranoid as shit as it is about whats best for my bike. Thanks
hehehe, s-all good bro... like i said the other day, i'm actually using V-twin motorcycle specific oil, it's thicker (15w50) but works just fine.... s-all good in the hood. I've had no issues. only thing that it might do is make the starter work a LITTLE harder, but i haven't had a single starting issue.

15w 0r 20w in the summer won't make the starter work any harder
I don't do my own oil changes, but FWIW, my mechanic puts in 10w40 in winter and 20w50 in summer when I'm low, I add whatever is handy (usually a diesel grade 15w-40)
oil is oil

OIL IS NOT OIL!!!
you damn old farts who have been "running CAR oil in your bikes for years and never had any problems" need to wake the fuck up.
you dont run car oil in the tranny of your car do you? NO. Why? because its not the same as tranny fluid. most M/C oil runs through both the tranny AND the motor and car oil doesnt have the shear strength that M/C oil does. i know that no one actually sail "i use car oil" but the oil is oil comment was leading right to it

the only car oil that might be bad for a bike is oil labeled as energy conserving, and you will notice tyhat it is always 0w-30 or 5w-30 viscosity and does not meet the viscosity requirements
you can go ahead and waste $$ on motorcycle specific if you like, but I have yet to see anybody ever have a problem that was related to car oils in a bike

Last season I used 10W40
This season I tried 20W50
No big diff. I was paranoid to when the guy at the dealership said go with a thicker oil. Just when the temp drops after the season ....the bike might have a harder time starting with the thicker stuff.
I actually might go back to 10W40 next change
Eh, I just use crisco in the winter. Then I use crisco with my "secret lubricant" in the summer![]()
As long as it's specific for the vehicle, I'll use it.![]()
