I was doing an oil change on my ducati monster track bike and found a rather large price of metal attached to the magnetic drain plug. Does anyone have an idea where it came from and should I be concerned? I plan on pulling the oil pickup screen and checking that, but I first need to buy a large enough hex driver socket.
That looks like a shim of some variety to me, and the rest of it is somewhere in the motor.
Yes, I'd be concerned.
Looks like a lock tab washer.
To me it looks like a piece of a locking washer like Rambunctious said. I'd pull the covers off the clutch and stator and see if you see anything else. It's easy enough to do to at least get a starting point. Maybe it came from the clutch side and you can just put it back together with a new washer and all well be good.
What is the bike in question? I'm all curious now so I wanna pull up a parts fiche and go hunting.
It's Hobbs' old race bike. I'm pretty sure it's a monster 620 motor but not 100%
Yup, better trans (6spd vs 5spd) in the monster vs SS 620 motors IIRC, plus the ATPC 'slipper' clutch, IIRC. That was a strong runner too. I wondered where that bike wandered off to.
I removed the oil pickup screen and clutch cover. Nothing around the clutch side that I could see, but there were some small metal pieces on the oil screen. I'll pull the stator cover tomorrow. I need to cut down a hex key in order to get it to fit in a tight area by the shift linkage.
Clutch hub bearing inner seal.
When I start my KTM in the morning, rules are broken. Its inevitable...

I think it's some sort of shim. Based on the microfiche probably some part from the gearbox as there seems to be a lot of shims used there.
It's a 620 monster motor.
I stopped by Seacoast yesterday and they traced out the circumference of the part based on the piece I brought in. They think it could be Part ID 17 of page 37 from this link
ISSUU - 2004 Ducati Monster 620 by Pro Italia. Could be a washer from near the starting gear.
I still haven't had a chance to pull the left cover yet but hope to do it tonight.
Right next to a needle bearing too.
Well mystery solved, I found the rest of the washer. Luckily it was pretty much intact. The nut had completely backed off and the flywheel and spring washer all came off when I pulled the case cover off.
I'm ready to put it all back together with new parts but I have a question about the three bond 1215 gasket sealant. I can't seem to find any curing times anywhere. If I get the case covers all buttoned up today would it be safe to run on the track tomorrow?
You'll be fine for tomorrow.
phew...not knowing where the other half went would've driven me crazy
