Hello...
The VFR is my first new bike and my first bike with a warranty etc on it... my question is does the warranty cover the scheduled services that are listed in my manual??? Or is it just for when something breaks etc...
Thanks in advance as always!!!
Mike
1. The warranty does NOT cover scheduled services
2. Do NOT take the bike to the dealer for the 600 mile service...rip-off. I KNOW you are capable of doing an oil change yourself Mike.
derek
Oilwass dat??? Ya I guess I could figrue it out...

Is that all they would do?? what about checking torques on the bolts etc....???
Do it yourself!
Dealers don't do any of that stuff, just change the oil and charge ya $130 or so.
bring the bike to the track sat and we can change the oil/filter and check everything out much in a much more thorough manner than the dealer would.
Derek
Sure so then YOU can charge me $130 bucks...bring the bike to the track sat and we can change the oil/filter and check everything out much in a much more thorough manner than the dealer would.![]()
but seriously... that would be cool... although I'll need to see your Honda Certification before allowing you near my new baby...
ok so seriously this time... thanks for the offer... let's hope I can muster up 600 miles by then!!!! I guess I'll have to ride it everyday after work this week.... O' bummer.....![]()
I kinda agree with Degsy. They are SUPPOSED to rip the top half of the engine apart and check the valves and heads to make sure everything is 'seating' properly. They're also SUPPOSED to check all the torques, check valves, do the erl & filter, and shit like that. Although, not too many places actually run it through the paces like that...
Personally, I'd still bring it to 'em though. Especially with the warranty. The last new bike I bought, I actually went down to the shop while it was there and watched 'em do a lot of this 'initial servicing'. And they actually did pull the heads off & shit. Some places CLAIM that if you don't have the first one done by the dealership that'll void the warranty. I highly doubt it'd hold up, but is it worth the headache?
Call the shop. Ask 'em what they do for the money you'll be spending. Then ask 'em if you can go down and check it out while they're doing it. If they make up some lame-ass excuse about why you can't, ya probably have your answer right there. But if they're willing to letchya come down for a coupla hours, chances are they'll be doing what they're actually supposed to...
None of this is to say that I would EVER bring a bike back to a dealer for servicing. But with a brandy-new bike, I think I may take the extra step rather than throw caution to the wind...
Did you grit your teeth and try to look like Clint Fuckin' Eastwood?
Or did you lisp it all hangfisted like a fuckin' flower?
Hmmm good thoughts Jay.... makes sense... IF they are actually going to do those things... as far as checking torques and changing oil I could do those along the way regardless....
I'll have to call them and see what they say....
Thanks guys!!!
Mike
I am pretty sure that the VFR has an oil change and a bolt check for the first service, that's all.
Honda honors the warranty as long as you keep reciepts for the oil and filter.
You don't need to chec the valves that early.

Maybe not. But if they pull the heads off to check 'wear in', they should check clearences to be safe. I watched 'em do this on the last new bike I bought...Originally posted by Degsy

All I'm saying is to call 'em and see what it is they're supposed to do. Some people swear by the initial service, some swear by NOT doing it. You'll get as many answers to this question as you will 'what oil should I use' or 'which tires are better'...
Call 'em. If you're not happy with what they hafta offer for your +/- $200, don't take it to 'em. Obviously, if you're satisfied with what they tell ya and you're confident the work will actually be performed, have at it...
Personally, I feel that if the manufacturer's really stood by their products, they'd offer the initial service as part of the sales package...

Yeah Derek... I think it said in the manual that at 600 miles it needed the oil/filter change, check torques and engine idle speed.... I don't think it said much else...
but as Jay said... and it won't hurt to do it... I'll give them a call when the time comes and see what they have to say... I am not paying that much for an oil change and some tightened bolts... that's for sure.... but maybe for safety's sack I'll bring it in the first time around... who knows...
Mike
"...safety's SACK..."??? Wow! I had no idea....![]()
