Degs, I tried pm'ing you but your inbox is full.
Anyway, a question for you, or anyone else with 51 engine experience. I've got two rc51 engines that I'm planning on opening up, it'll be the first time for me, looking to do it as a learning experience and diagnose some suspected problems, any recommendations, suggestions, insight? I'd also be curious to know what kind of performance upgrades I should/could consider once I've gotten inside...
Thanks,
Matt

I would suggest getting a time machine and going back 2 months to when we had 2 Honda gear driven v motors in pieces in my garage. You could have learned mucho then. Lol.
Try CP or moriwaki for oversize pistons. Bigger is always the way to get big gains. You could of course mill the heads and port/polish. There are probably lightweight rods on eBay from time to time.
What kid of problems are you expecting to see inside?
I'd check the transmission out thoroughly. Including all the shift mechanism stuff on the left side. You could take the quieteners off the cam gears to free up a tiny bit.
There's a million things you could do but improving fueling with exhaust and air intake changes are easiest and cheapest.
Damnit!!
The first engine somehow got coolant in it, I'm hoping it's just the water pump impeller seal. But if not I'll have to check the head gasket I think? The other is the engine from the RC51 that you gave me a heads up about, the one you may have done a little gear shaft rod "repair"... I haven't taken the engine cover off yet to check it out, but from your description of it I'm assuming this is the bike, so I'm expecting to have to do a complete disassembly and repair.
I guess on the performance side I'm wondering about porting and polishing the heads, but not really sure. As far as exhaust and A/F improvements, I've got Sato low mounts a modded airbox and a custom tune so she's pretty well set up there I think.

Well, a compression check on the one with coolant in it is a good start.
I know what you need for the one with the shift shaft issue. It's an inner engine side case (left side).
I have an engine stand in my garage. I'm pretty busy with projects right now but you're welcome to use the stand and disassemble a motor in my garage. I'm not using the stand or my engine bench for a while.
Don't RC51's require premium ?

Lol. Randy. That was my initial thought also.
That was pretty good Randy, didn't know where you were going with the first reply.
And thanks for the offer Degs, but I've got a good work station, I was looking more for some insight into the basics once I get started.

Hey degs, got the engine on my work bench, pulled the left side engine cover, can you tell me exactly what I'm looking for?

Haha. Look inside for some JB weld skillfully holding a bolt in the shift actuator system.
Ok, I think we must be talking about different left side covers. I took the stator cover off, that's not what I need to do I guess?

Left side. The large cover. From memory it's about 10 8MM bolts.
