SV650s Overheating

Fan not spinning (sometimes they get a small rock jammed in there), fuse blown that controls fan, not enough coolant (check coolant overflow bottle), thermostat jammed shut.

Does the fan ever come on?

i've only been in stop & go traffic once or twice on the SV... haven't had any problems.
(not that that's saying much)

drain flush install pink stuff 50/ 50 pre mix di water new cap & tstat should do u unless u got head gasket or some other shit going on dont forget 2 bleed the water pump

Don't flush it, that won't help you if the bike is that new (unless someone really screwed up at the dealers).
Just let it idle at a standstill for 10 minutes, this is the quickest way to get a bike hot. By that time the temp should be at about 210-230 degrees and the fan should kick in. When the fan kicks in the temp will drop very quickly until the fan kicks off again. If the fan does not kick on then you have a fuse blown or a fan motor blown or a blockage to the fan blades.

BEFORE you start the bike and warm it up, try to turn the fan blades by hand. They should spin freely. DO NOT go near the fan with your fingers after the bike is warm as the fan can start independently of the ignition being on.

Do you have a digital temp guage on that bike?

I would have thought that you would just about be able to hear the fan kick in with a helmet on at idle.

i can't hear the fan at idle when i'm geared up & earplugged, but i can when the ignition is on & killswitch is off post-ride.

Look at your factory owners manual also and see if it is ok for the high temp light to come on occasionally. If the fan is coming on and the high temp light is still coming on, it might be ok, but you may want to flush your coolant and go with a distilled water/Water wetter mix like the race bikes use. This will bring the operating temp of your bike down a few degrees.

Has anyone had any experience with an SV650s overheating. I bought mine last year (2001 Model year) and twice this year it's overheated in stop-and-go traffic.

Any ideas???

Degsy --> Could be the fan ... I've never checked it. On a SV is it normally loud enough to hear with a helmet on ... i.e. should I be able to hear when it's on while I'm sitting at a stop light?



I had over 38k on my SV before the first time I ever got mine hot enuf to turn the fan on, I was riding with my wife (she was learning on her CM250) for a couple hours at very slow speeds, when the fan kicked in, I freaked out, never heard that noise before, I thought something was wrong.

I guess I can't help more than saying whats already been said, I've never seen my overheat light come on (fan has only come on a few times, that time I described from a couple years ago, and a few weeks ago when I was riding in stop n go traffic in Florida.

Here's how you check your t-stat: If you look on the outer ring of it, it'll tell ya what it's rated for. Get a pan of water hotter than what your t-stat is rated for. Drop 'er in the water when it gets to that temp and see if it opens. Yes, it's that easy to check...
