I got a small hole in the center of a relatively new tire and since I can't find a shop to plug it I'm just going to do it myself. I have no problem paying for a mount and balance but if there was a ghetto way to remove the tire myself that would save me some time and $.
Ete, and if anyone has a source for the good internal plugs that would be sweet, all I seem to come up while searching are the string kind.

You can use the kickstand and the weight of a bike to knock the bead of the rim. Then use some good spoons the rest of the way.
About as ghetto as it gets...

Mark the rim/tire so it goes back on balanced
Whitehorse etc. all have mushroom plugs
WHy not string plug from outside ?

If you find a good place to get those patches that pull through, please share the link, I need some as well.
A C clamp and some care works great to break the beads free. Duct tape and blue painters tape help prevent scratches... Dish soap mixed 50/50 with water makes sure everything slides past each other. If this is your first tire - you'll chase it around the garage for about an hour and not to jinx you - You will have at least one bloody knuckle.

That "string" patch will work fine. Don't overthink this.
Here's a little secrete an older gent told me many moons ago.
Get a little jar of rubber cement ,get your plugs , I like the red clay colored ones , ream out the hole to clean it and make it big enough for the plug, thread plug into install tool , dip plug into rubber cement , install plug into inflated tire , des not have to be up to norm air pressure , just enough to hold shape so the plug sets correctly , only push plug in enough that the bend is on the inside of the tire , maybe 1/4 inch , you don't need excess off balance wieght, trim both ends of plug with razor as close to flush as possible. Fill tire with correct pressure , glue dries in 5 or ten min. The plug will not come out , if you do it rite it won't leak, and ill last the duration of the rest of the tire , at most it will have a slow leak, so keep an eye on it , you should check tire pressure every ride or atleast every spirited ride.
The plug will not explode and give a blowout like in the movies.
The other way is removing the tire, spreading, sanding or preping the rubber and glueing a patch on the inside, 6 of 1 and half dozen of the other.
The plug will wear down with the tire, when the tire becomes to thin to hold the plug , it may then get a slow leak, but you shouldn't let your tires get that thin anyways.
I've run plugs in almost all my. Tires , not by choice, I just can't see tossing a good tire when you can fix it.
All of this is providing that you did not damage any cords in the tire.

The first part of the above post is how I have always done it. It works fine. Don't overthink it.
YUP, those are really expensive. I was at Tricky Mokes once and he had some nice patches that were like a flat patch, with a long cord out the center. You pulled it through from the back and it filled the hole and patched the inside at the same time. I have never been able to find them, I should probably just PM tricky mike...
edit: HOLY CRAP, finally found them, only $15 as well, SCORE!
