Under API SM/GF4, with zinc limited to 800ppm, and phosphorous and moly nearly eliminated owing to our friends at EPA and the folks that warrant cats, what are you guys using in your bikes these days? Additives, or the Honda-Suzuki-Yahmaha labled brands that fit the old SJ standard?
I realize most new bikes have exhaust-stream air injection and cats, but even those still need the oil to protect the trannies..

I don't know if this is related to flat tappet cams, but I know with our Turbo Buicks and some other older cars, we need to make sure we have enough of the zinc and phosphorus molecule or whatever. There is a supplement out there that is recommended for that called ZDDP. I haven't personally used it yet, I found a cheaper although probably not as good alternative for the mean time.
EDIT: The supplement product is called ZDDPlus. Sorry.

Uh oh, oil thread.
I'm an Amsoil guy. I use it exclusivley in everything I own. My VFR has the Motorcycle 10W-30 in it. I also use an Amsoil filter.

Im running full synthetic suzuki oil and an oem filter. From experience, using the oil recommended from the factory is the best.

Well, there's a product in Big Lots (or used to be, I don't bother with the car) called Street Level Oil Boost (SLOB) that had a huge dose of ZDDP, and there's another at PEP and by order from Napa called Valvoline Sythetic Oil Treatment. It's loaded with Moly and ZDDP. It was meant for just this situation with flat tappets in American V-8s from the API SJ-era. Some guys use it in their DOHC Hondas and whatnot, but it's not necessary in DOHCs from Japan, those engines, unless "riced out" get along fine on SM. The Valvoline being loaded with Moly, I dunno if that would be good for a clutch, even if the zinc would be good for the trannie.
Sounds like a good diesel HDEO is the way to go. Tx!![]()
