So I am rapidly approaching 8000 mi and other than regular oil changes I haven't done much in the line of "in-depth" maintenence. I figured 8g was a good time to ask if there is anything that I should look into.?. I keep the chain up and stuff but haven't got into fork seals or anything that isn't done on a fairly reg basis. [the fork seals look fine btw].
So...is there anything that I should look into on the Rex?

Yeah, check the manual man. Or you should also be able to find a maintenance chart somewhere online... Heck, I can find one for my bike online and there were less than 1000 of em in my year shipped to the states
Alot of bikes will spec valve clearance check at 8K miles, typically a fairly expensive dealer service that you can easily do yourself if you can follow directions EXACTLY, and can work a wrench.
Cheers,
Chris
But when we ride very fast motorcycles, we ride with immaculate sanity. We might abuse a substance here and there, but only when it's right. The final measure of any rider's skill is the inverse ratio of his preferred Traveling Speed to the number of bad scars on his body. It is that simple: If you ride fast and crash, you are a bad rider. If you go slow and crash, you are a bad rider. And if you are a bad rider, you should not ride motorcycles.
Air filter. I have the type you have to clean and re-oil. Not sure if you have the same or not. It's pretty easy to do.
For a late model bike with 8K miles, the need to do spark plugs, valve adjustment, and carb sync is debatable. If you had a race bike you were trying to get every last bit of HP out of, I would do it. For your bike...if it's running well...you need to weigh the cost/benefit/risk of doing or not doing it. If it runs well, doing plugs and a carb sync at this point will not get you much. Doing a valve adjustment won't get you much performance unless it's way out, which is possible but not likely. If it's one of those rare cases where it's way out at 8K miles, you could potentially do some damage if you neglect it too long.
I recently did my valve adjustment and carb sync for the first time at 14K miles. They were both pretty good as-is and needed little adjustment. If you've never turned a wrench before, don't try it yourself. If you have some basic skills, you can do it by following a good shop manual.
Just my (non-expert) opinion.
umm, absolute ditto. Its unlikely (but possible) that your valves are out of tolerance at that mileage, and synching carbs is probably not necessary at that mileage either, but if you want your bike to run its absolute best, its good to do.Originally posted by scootertrash

Although IMO, its always worth learning how to do all of the basic service elements yourself, including valves, carb sync, plugs, fluid flush fill(oil, radiator, brake), etc, etc.
If you plan on keeping the bike for any great number of miles, its always beneficial to know as much as you possibly can about how to maintain it and do the regularly scheduled maintenance. Will save you a bundle in the end, just my opinion though...

Bragging? Heh, hardly. With this bike its more like playing mad scientist to find which jap crack parts will fit cos I'll be damned if I am buying Triumph parts... @$9 a valve shim, its not quite BMW assrape prices ($15 a shim), but still... Hmmm, should I buy R6 clipons for $28 on ebay, or should I buy the Jack Lilley clipons for $fuckmymommatheycostthatmuch! 1000 in the US == exclusivity, but exclusivity == god damn i can't find any parts, and zero fucking aftermarket support. Grumble, grumble...
Good luck with the tune up, if its the 'member' I think it is, I am sure you'll learn alot and get everything done rightTake notes man!
Cheers,
Chris
