I have a 2000 ZX9 that I bought at the beginning of this year...
The engine seems awful loud, like it is ticking or something.
Of course the fan came on right when I started to take the video... so try and filter that out if you can.
It has 11,000 on it and I do not think it has had the valves checked/ adjusted.
Does it sound normal to you guys? I attached a video. At the end it does it pretty good.
It sounds fine when it is revved up higher (or the exhaust just drowns it out?) I seem to hear it when I come off the throttle.
It has a D-D Exhaust- and I know the exhaust is obviously loud, im listening to the engine...

Thanks guys

Sounds like a cam chain tensioner pretty common on hondas not sure about Kawies.

I agree that it sounds off. I would also agree that it is probably related to the cam chain tensioner.

I had a Z1000 (same engine as the ZX9) and it was never that loud.

Sounds louder than mine. The CCT is such a simple and un-stressed device on those though, I can't imagine how it would fail.
It is easy to test, just remove the cap on it, insert a tool, push on the end of the rod until you feel it click, and put the cap back on. Start the bike up and see if it's quieter. If it is quieter, you can probably just leave it alone until the it gets loud again and then repeat the same process, if you want to.
Isn't the cam chain on the opposite side of that engine? (meaning the right side)
Sounds like an exhaust leak to me.
Have you done anything with the headers recently?
I have not touched anything with the exhaust recently. I took the tank off yesterday and the airbox was missing one screw. I put a new screw in, tightened down the carb boots to the engine and the boots from the airbox. Also it looked as if one of the airbox boots wasn't seated properly on the carb.
It sounds a little better.
