Hey fellow members,
I was hoping someone in the north shore area may have a cutting torch I could borrow for all of 10 minutes. Someone decided that welding the coupler to a trailer was necessary and now I need to cut the welds to get the lunette ring out. I'll make it worth your while. Beers and cash perhaps.
I'm located in Saugus, MA![]()
If you need just the torch & hoses, I can help. I don't have a gas tank or anything, so YOYO for that. I realize this probably isn't what you're looking for, but...

Wish I were closer, I'd trade you torches for Kane's donuts.

I use propane instead of acetylene. Works well enough for my amateur skills.

Propane is perfectly fine for cutting / heating operations. If you use it please make sure the hoses and tips are rated for propane (they are different than acetylene tips... Propane hoses are fine with acetylene, but not vice versa).
Unpossible to Weld steel with a propane torch.
I think you can. In fact I think I've seen them at Home Depot/Lowe's. It's pricey but here's an example.

I have a mini kit like that. They are popular with plumbers and HVAC techs.

Woah, I didn't knew they made oxygen versions that small. Good to know!
For removing stuck bolts and the like, I find those propane cans useless -- they just don't get hot enough. I have the MAPP version (no oxygen can, though) and it's great.

They dont last very long, but they do work. Oxygen and MAPP will get plenty hot!!!
But, if he can borrow your torches and buy his own gas in those little canisters, it could work
nothing beats a real torch, luckily I can borrow my father in laws. I had to remove studs from the turbo on the new truck and they were stuck, that torch heated the flange up cherry red in just a few second and the studs came right out

Thanks guys. I found some kits on craigslist available but have a feeling this will be a one time use thing for a while. I'm not sure propane is going to get hot enough to cut the welds that I need.
Propane alone, in the mini torch will not cut.
A real propane cutting rig, that looks just like an acetylene rig will definitely cut steel. No problem. Most professional salvagers use propane rather than acetylene, both for cost and versatility reasons. As mentioned, however, you need T rated hoses and propane tips.
That's tough job. Between the way it's boxed in and the mass that will soak heat as you're trying to cut, a strong plasma cutter might be a better bet. A torch will do it with a big enough cutting tip though, if you can handle the slag coming back at you. On second thought, maybe a thermal lance...
I had a job like that where I had to remove a forged drawbar that had been stick welded into a truck hitch. It sucked.
Propane/oxy? To weld or cut?
Oxygen and MAPP will get your wallet plenty hot in those little disposable cylinders. I can't imagine you could ever get the OP's project hot enough to cut before the oxygen cylinder ran out. And cutting takes a LOT of oxygen. It would be like taking a day trip on your bike and fueling it with those quart cans of "pure" gas. The threads also don't match full size regulators on those disposable cylinders.

If you want to have some real fun, I have a set of carbon arc torches if you've got a welder.

Let me see if I can get a pintle hook to connect it up and I would be happy to do that. I appreciate the offer. Where are you located again?
